Hey everyone,

I'm working on a metal door, like you might find in the back alley leading to a bar or something like that, and I've been having a hard time figuring out how best to shade it. The metal is a relatively smooth surface, so I don't want to go with a traditional approach that might make it look like wood grain.

I decided to take a crack at dithering (I'm very new to all this, so this is a first attempt) and I can't decide whether or not I like the results or not. Here's a picture of the basic door, and a few dithering attempts. Any thoughts? Advice?

Thanks.

Can you post a regular sized photo? Not blown up like this. And for future reference, you don't necessarily NEED to blow up images; if you click on a picture in the forum the size will increase.

I just took a screencap from my graphics program and I guess I was zoomed in a bit. Here's a further away shot next to some window tiles I've been working on. Hope that helps you get a better idea of what they might look like in game.

If the surface is smooth I would recommend just a flat color. The dithering gives it a rough texture and in the way you shaded it, makes it look like it is a cylinder.

The way you made the door look implies that it is rounded, unless you're going to have a rounded door (which I think you don't) stick with one shade of colour for the surface, so it would look flat, and not like a cylinder.

Something along the lines of this? Or something different?

Something different. That's five colors, in bands. He is suggesting one color, uniform across the entire surface, because the surface is only one flat plane so there does not seem to be any reason at all to shade it.

Yep, I agree. The flat color looks much better. i would just use one of your other darker colors to give the door handle and lock a bit of a shadow cast on the door just to give it a bit more depth.

I can't understand where is the light source, but ... just give you some example what I dislike. Suggest you, don't put images in double size it's not easy to work on them ...
