I have seen lots of pixel art that follows this style of using triangles. Is there a name for this style and are there tutorials that might describe it better?

Here is an example image I found in the gallery to show what I mean.

That example you showed, see if you can search the internet for others. If it turns out they are all made by the same person, it is more than likely a art style that kind of evolved out of that artist. If several people do that it probably has a name. But I do not know it. This is just a way you may find it.
