![]() Topic: [Beginner] Rollie PolliePosted: 10 February 2014 at 8:00am |

Hey everyone. I'm a first time spriter (well, I made a rip off of Mario went I download GALE, but that is all) and I'm struggling a bit with this Rollie Pollie design I'm working on for a game that I plan on making.
First off, we have the Rollie Pollie in its ball form.
Then, this is the part I need the most help on. I can't think of how to add arms and legs. If anyone has any suggestions, please share.
Thank you for your time. Go easy please ;) |

Hmmm...
Do you have a concept of what the character should look like? To me, this looks like a millipede crossed with a woodlouse (pill bug). So it should be flat to the ground horizontally, rather than standing upright. If you need it to be upright, try something like this (crappy edit):
I noticed that these pieces are using some non-pixel art effects. Sorry to say that's a bit of a no-go on this forum. This tutorial will help: The Pixel Art Tutorial Hope this all helps! |

I'm not sure it is a non pixel art effect, but rather distortion and noise from using a lossy file format, .JPEG. Please use .GIF or .PNG next time :)I'd also watch how you're increasing the images size, it needs to stay the same aspect ratio. 1.1, 2.2, 3.3, 4.4, otherwise that will create distortion too.
Here's a reference for a Rollie Pollie standing, it's a cartoon btw. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JTXl3q1kUso/THykgXhe_0I/AAAAAAAAA4A/ks2DEMYOPNA/s1600/rollie_pollie.jpg Oh, this is a great reference. I love how awesome it looks when it's curled into a ball. References are important, specifically when you're starting out. Try and look at this and understand the differences between yours and the real thing. ![]() Edited by Damian - 10 February 2014 at 1:13pm |

Thank you for the help.
My design choice isn't really to look 100% like a real Rollie. I guess you could say it is a hybrid, humanoid Rollie. I want it to be more of a character than a real representation, that is why I'm not doing it walking on all of its little legs. Rather, I want it to walk on two legs, and have two arms (all four limbs of which will be bigger than the rest, obviously) as my game will be a platformer of sorts. Also, I redid the colors. I was embarrased to find out that my friend thought it was turd, so I recolored it. I also found a way to add legs and arms that I think looks decent. Obviously still open for more suggestions. For what it is worth, I'm using GALE, so if you have any program specific advice, please share. I'm not sure how to resize it to a perfect ratio, and you were correct in saying that it was distortion. As for the rolled up design, I like the way mine looks, but I'll see how it looks if I try to add more jagged edges. Anyway, here is recolor and limbs.
And here is recolored Rolled up design.
Thank you again for the tips. Any more a very appreciated. |

First off,I need to mention how much of an improvement you've made, I'm glad you're taking all of this to heart.
Even so, I've had a quick look at your choice in colours and have noticed that you lack a range in value, i.e. the difference from your darkest colours to your lightest colours. Because of this you're character looks flat. Utilizing ranges in value increases an objects volume, making it look more like a 3D object. You will kick yourself when you realise just how flat it is at the moment. Don't worry about that though, we've all been there and done that. I use Photoshop, so I'm not sure what you'd use to resize. In Photoshop it's nearest neighbour, but I'm not sure what the equivalent is in graphics gale. And when resizing you obviously resize by 2,3,4.... times and nothing in-between. Anyway, I look forward to your progression. Edited by Damian - 11 February 2014 at 12:30pm |
