Hello all. I'm working on a harvest moon clone that is set in a sci-fi type environment. I'm still new to pixel art but I've been able to get a decent look for my building. I'm struggling with adding smaller details and textures. I'm mainly concerned that everything looks too clean. I don't know how to dither at all and I'm not sure if it's needed in this piece.

I like cleaner styles of pixel art like A Link to the Past. I just can't help feeling like I'm missing something.

This is really nice looking.
Dithering could be used but its not right for it unless its a small texture.
Don't quite understand what you seek. Are you asking about aging it?

It's not a problem to have clean looking scifi, in fact most of it is very clean. What bothers me more is the floor you're using; it's very noisy and the grating also doesn't look nice to walk over.

Does it feel like it's missing any smaller details that would make it looked age or dirty? Does it look out of place or too clean to be believable?

It's taking me a long time to do these graphics. I've probably spent a solid 20-25 hours just on this exterior and interior and I'm sure I'll get faster in time as I get more practice. I've just been staring at it for so long I'm wondering if it looks right or finished.

that's a really great idea for a game.
As for making it look dirtier, you can achieve it without dithering. You could essentially give it a stained look, slightly altering the hue/value to suggest discoloration or dents, dull or rough sections, etc.

I agree with you PixelSnader. I wanted the floor to work out but I knew it didn't look right. I've edited it to try and make it look interesting but not stand out so much.

Here it is at 2x

I made some subtle changes to the exterior as well. I tried some subtle discolorations like you suggested, AlexHW, but they just looked like areas where I forgot to color correctly :/ I'd like to do something more with the steps and the deck part of the building too but I don't have any great ideas.

Definite improvement to the floor.

As for making it dirty, like Snader said, you don't have to - nothing wrong with clean sci-fi. But, if you're set on dirty (also cool), here's an edit I made

(Yes, dithering, sorry!)

The key is to make it dirty in ways that would happen irl. Grime should accumulate in corners and crevices, not the middle of nowhere. Mechanical parts might get grease and stuff all over them (like the leaky vents I made). Add some access panels and sh*t, cuz right now, the whole structure is way too perfect - if someone was capable of making such a clean-cut, flawless building with nothing like obvious screws, vents, pipes, etc, why would they have problems keeping it clean? Look at city rooftops and slums for inspiration. Lights get broken, walls get vandalized. Etc.

I got some really great advice on here and on reddit. I like the clean version I started with and I think I'll still use it but the reason I want it to look dirtier is that the premise of the game is a future colony on a distant planet but they've kind of devolved because of lack of food. A lot of the buildings would be dirtier and in disrepair while you're helping to rebuild their society. This is where I'm at now but I still have more work to do.

That looks really good! I'm a sucker for orange stripes, hah. Also, the stairs look much better, too.

I would say it's probably best you move on and design some more buildings now instead of getting too stuck on this one. It looks fine, at least for now.

Also, protip: clicking on an image in the forums will upsize it, so you don't have to post zoomed in versions.

I really appreciate the tips. I think I've settled on the final version for now. I just wanted to do something more with the deck part. I think I'm ready to start tackling some of the other assets I need to get done :x
