![]() Topic: [WIP] [CC] NES Style Mars Platformer ScenePosted: 13 July 2015 at 9:07pm |

Hey all! Bit off more than I could chew with my previous pixel art project so I'm going to try and learn pixel art by starting with an 8 bit style.
I'm really inspired by games like Batman: Return of the Joker, Shatterhand, and other late gen NES games. It's truly awesome how the developers were pushing the NES toward the end. Some of these game could pass for early Genesis or SNES games! I love all the pure blacks and dithering! So I'm restricting myself to NES limitations. Besides those non tiling mountains, I think everything looks like it would belong on the NES, right? The scene is some sort of alien red planet being excavated by humans and robots. I'd really appreciate any critiques or feedback on the work so far. ![]() Honestly, I'm not sure about the blue and red overall color palette but I don't think any other color matches well with the redness of a Mars-like desert planet. Speaking of color palettes, I have a question about palettes. Can I mix from two colors from two palettes in into one tile? What I mean is can I make a tile that is dark red, light red, green, white red? I've seen instances of some games using a dash red in a green palette tile or yellow in a red palette tile. I hope that question made sense. I'll try and post an example of what I mean, I think I've seen some games do that. Anyway, thanks! |

This is looking really good! Although, I must say I'm not fond of the mountains. I didn't realize they were mountains at first, because they seem to have a different art style compared to the rest of the image. I would personally just leave the sky black and maybe add a few stars. I think the overall palette looks fine.
Unfortunately, I can't help you with your technical question. Sorry. |
