Hey guys, I have noticed quite a few sprites seem to use a purple-ish tone to them, seems to be in place of blacks/grays.

I was just wondering why people do this? Is there a specific reason for it?

Thanks

You might need to calibrate your monitor

Pruplish, blueish greys are often used because grey is boring

It's also because we tend to draw light sources as yellow/orange:

And to create more contrast between lit surfaces and shadowed surfaces, we can either make colors brighter and darker, or we can change the hues a bit. So often we choose a complementary color (purple or blue) for the shadows, as it makes the color ramps a bit more dynamic and at the same time feel more like bright/shadow parts. Also think about color temperature; when you're in the sun you're warmer than in the shadows, and blue is considered a cool color.

A lot of it has to do with color theory- PixelSnader was pretty much spot on.

This is the Color Wheel

If you look at the color wheel, the purples and blues are almost exactly opposite of the yellows and other colors we use as highlights.
