1.  2.
1. 2.  3.  4.

And another character entirely:
1.  2.

The shadow looks really dark against a light background, but it works pretty well in my mock-up tests. I'm not sure what to do for a background on the portrait -- it needs to be generic and not too distracting, but I think plain white is a little too plain.

Edit for updates!

The sprite looks great. I think you could use some of the shadows from the bottom of the dress around her torso area though.

I think there are some proportional issues with the face, mainly i think, being that her eyes are too high up her head, and/or there's not enough hair on the top of her head to cover the skull properly. For a background, if you want to keep it uber simple, i suggest a plain colour to represent the character, for example, green for this lady. If you added a border to that i think it would look fine. Don't have any other ideas really.

Anyway, nice work, good luck with it.

I think the main problem anatomically (with the portrait) is that she appears to have no... cranium? Place for a brain, whatever you call it.

I made an edit, but I dunno what the policy is on that 'round here. I'll wait for your o.k. to post it.

That sprite is ace, by the way. Love it.

Thanks guys!

And I think edits are fine, though I guess I beat you to it this time... unless you gave her Even More Cranium ;)

Hmm.. no, my edit is off, 'cause it changes the direction in which the portrait is facing. I think that's what is throwing me... give me 5 or 10 minutes. I'm gonna try something.

EDIT:
Yeah, I figured put what was bothering me. The face is off center given the direction of the head (which is what made her look de-cranium'd).

Here's my take on it:

Now, this changes the look of the character, but that's just because I drew her features wrong. What I think is important is the placement, though. Everything is more centered, making it look like wer're seeing her straight on. Before her face was in 3/4ish perspective while the head was frontal.

Just my take on it. I may be off, but hopefully this is somewhat, somehow, a bit helpful.. maybe

Interesting. And a kinda neat portrait, too, even if it does look like someone else. I definitely see your point about the perspective mismatch. Hm... I'll have to see what I can do. I have to say, I'm much more inclined to try to put the head in 3/4 than to change the features. But thanks for taking the time to make the point.

You've been pretty busy with your pixelling, Morgan! Is this sprite to go with that armoured knight you posted earlier?

I like Termulant's edit. Her feature's seem softer and more anotomically placed, but that isn't to say you have to use it. I mean, one critisism I have of manga style is that the characters all seem to look so generic and physically perfect. Your version definately has bolder features, and that could add more character to your game portraits. Just work on that placement, as Tremulant mentioned.
Listen to what the flower people say...

The portrait does need some work. I like Tremulant's edit as well, but I think her neck looks really odd still.  Maybe give her a necklace or something?

Added the latest portrait to the top post. Hopefully I've fixed the head to match the face. I'm pretty happy with the face, and I'd rather not mess around with it. That said, I did an edit (well, okay, I completely reworked the thing) to create a more conventionally "pretty" character, too. Feedback appreciated.

iSTVAN: Yeah, I've turned into a bit of a pixel junky. I'm actually planning on taking some time off soon, so I'll get to sit at home and pixel for days on end... bliss! ;P

These characters go with the other one in the sense that I want to build up a library of stylistically consistent graphics, to make short RPGs with. But I'm waffling on my original story, so who they really are and whether they'll end up in the same game is a bit up in the air.

Aleiav: How's that for the neck? I don't think there's quite enough room for a necklace, and I'm trying to avoid adding clothing details to the portraits, in case they change in-game.

The new blonde character is very well done.
I still think however, that you should increase the height of the hair on their heads... but m'owel. Keep it up.

Thanks. She's not my favorite of the two, but I think I got the look I was going for.

And yeah, forehead/hair size is apparently one of my blind spots. The original still looks okay to me, and if I move the hair a pixel higher, it looks way too high... at least to me. :P

The new blonde one works better anatomically, imo. I don't know what your process is at the moment, but I'd suggest drawing the head bald first, then adding hair/features afterwards. The initial portrait's 'no cranium' problem could be remedied in this way (though the new face, like I mentioned, seems to have it fixed anyway).

I hope you wouldn't mind =) I would fix blond face geometry a bit.

It looks rather twisted...Maybe (short fix):

Tremulant: You mean actually shading the head too, I suppose... yeah, I can see how that might help. Thanks for the tip.

Fool: Thanks! I took a slightly different approach to fixing the problem (I hope), but thanks for taking the time to point it out.

Edit: Latest versions are in the 1st post.
