    Posted: 24 May 2005 at 7:34am

A friend just bought me a gift subscription to gamefly.com's game service.  I can rent any two PS2/Gamecube games at a time and I was just wondering if anybody can recommend a few games for either system.  If you happen to know of any good two player games or RPGs  that would be great.

Just for fun here are some of my favorite games...

  • Mario Kart (GC)
  • Mario Tennis (GC)
  • GTA: Vice City (PS2)
  • Katamari Damacy (PS2)
  • Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal (PS2)
  • Ico (PS2)
  • DDR Max (PS2)

Harhar, no X-Box  (I don't like X-Box!)
I only have a GameCube, some of my favourite games are:
  • Super Smash Bros Melee (awesome, both in single and multiplayer mode)
  • Wario Ware Inc.: Mega Party Game$ (single player could've been a lot better, but multiplayer is loads of fun)
  • Paper Mario 2: the Thousand Year door (very very nice RPG)
  • Animal Crossing (I should start playing this one again, haven't played since Halloween >_>)
I also got Metroid Prime today, which is pretty damn cool too.
And I heard Tales of Symphonia is a really good RPG for GameCube... It's also available for PS2, but only in Japan, I believe.

Thx Blueberry.  I put Paper Mario 2 and Tales of Symphonia in the queue.  I bought Smash Brothers when we first got the Gamecube, but my girlfriend doesn't like to play it.

Animal Crossing seems like the perfect game for casual online play.  Just a fun place to goof around.

GameCube games I bought:
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker
  • Medal of Honor Frontline
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • 007 Nightfire
  • Animal Crossing
  • International Superstar Soccer 3
  • SSX3 (dunno what SSX stands for)
  • Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
  • MarioKart: Double Dash
My favorites:
  1. Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker
  2. MarioKart: Double Dash
  3. Super Smash Bros. Melee
  4. Animal Crossing
Hm. I need more GameCube games.

@Blueberry: I agree that Xbox lacks in certain areas. It doesn't fit under my TV for example. Besides that, I think the only reason that there is Xbox, is that Microsoft wants the marketshare and never really had any connection to console gaming. They should stay with their OS. I hate Halo for the same reason. Microsoft is evil.

I need my medicin.

Huzzah for Brian's 50th post... freak.

Burnout 3 and God of War... both incredibly fun games so far. Highly recommend em. I'm really enjoying Burnout and I normally hate racing games.

Burnout is awesome... I played 3 on a PS2 in a store once, and I have 2 for the GameCube myself... too bad Burnout 3 isn't available on GameCube

And yeah, Psychotic_Carp is right, Animal Crossing isn't an online game... Animal Crossing DS is, though (or will be, since it's not released yet).

EDIT: Another game I recommend is Donkey Konga... When you buy the game you get the DK Bongos with it, and you use them to drum along with the music. Pretty fun

Regarding Animal Crossing... what I meant to say is Animal Crossing would make a great online game, not that it currrently allows it. Gamecube doesn't even hook up online.

I played around with the bongos in Fry's and enjoyed it quite a bit.  It's expensive to get an extra set of bongos for two players -- 30 or 40 USD.

I haven't played the first two Burnouts, but my friends tell me that Burnout 3 is a huge step up from the first two.  I played it all night last night.  So fun.

Yeah, that's true. But you can also buy a Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat Pak for about $60... In that pak you get the game Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (which is really cool, though a bit short) and another set of bongos. That way you're only paying $10 for the bongos, since the game alone is $50
That's what I did... And I'm happy I did, it's fun playing Donkey Konga with others

More about Jungle Beat: it's a fun 3D platform game (not Mario 64 style, but sideview platform) which you control with the bongos... It's really cool, but like I said a bit on the short side.

Such a shame that there's only 1 or 2 online games for the GameCube

Yay for DDR Max!  I just bought it a few months ago and am now on heavy and am so stoked about it.

For the PS2:
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series - (PS2) My favourites were THPS 3 and 4, but THUG is pretty cool too.  I realize a lot of people don't dig this series, but I really love to play it.  (I pwnz0r at it too.  ;))
  • Tales of Symphonia - (GC) Not everyone likes cell-shaded anime-esque RPGs but eh.  Some do.  It's good if you're looking for a RPG for the Gamecube because that console seems to be lacking in good ones.
  • Paper Mario 2:  Thousand Year Door - (GC) I haven't had the pleasure of playing too much of this (my memory card was being.. ergh..) but from what I played it looked like a very enjoyable experience.
  • The Silent Hill Series - (PS2) I don't know if you like being scared (or horrified) while playing a game, but seriously, it'd be a fun game to play with your girlfriend there.  I know when I play it with my boyfriend I pretend to get all scared so I can cuddle.  (I'm lame.)  Not sure if they're your type of game, but it's worth a shot!
  • Revenge of the Sith - (PS2) Oh.  My.  God.  My boyfriend and I have SO much fun playing this together.  And we're both about equally good at it so the light saber battles get pretty ferocious.  I think it's a really fun two player game if you are looking for a little mindless fun.   With light saber action.
  • Harvest Moon:  A Wonderful Life - (GC) If you like Animal Crossing, then you'll probably like this.  Fun game, imo.
I realize a lot of you might not agree with these, but when I play some of these with my boyfriend we have a really good time.  The game we have the most fun playing together would probably be ROTS.  (Well, actually it's Halo, but you just asked for GC and PS2 games, eh?)

I've only played the first Silent Hill game a few years back and remember actually jumping out of my chair because some parts were done so well that it freaked me out. I think the key with that was the musical score... brilliant!

Ooh, forgot about this thread... just found my new favorite PS2 game -- Burnout 3.  Sooooo much fun and I usually hate race car games.

Chesheyre: Silent Hill 2 is the only one I played and it moved a little too slow for my tastes... a few good scares though.

I still mainly play the 3rd game (should be kinda obvious to anyone whos played it and unlocked the extra characters as to why), I couldn't get into the later ones.

Now this looks like a game I'd love to play, especially in 2 player, if only I wasn't so sick to death of Star Wars that I can't even stand to hear those light saber effects or the classic John Williams theme.  If anyone knows of a similar game for PS2 let me know...

My favorite GC games:
  • Animal Crossing

  • Resident Evil 4

  • Metroid Prime

Resident Evil 4 owns my soul! It is so amazing o___o

PS2

  • God of War

  • Katamari Damacy

  • Kingdom Hearts

  • SILENT HILL!!!!

  • Can you tell what sort of games I consistantly like? ;) I used to not really like the RE series, but then came RE4, and that was it. Silent Hill still holds a very special place in my heart though <3

I'm also a big RPG fan, but I've mostly only played RPGs on the PS1 and down >.>

And sedgemonky! You liked Ico? You're my hero now! I loved Ico too, I can't wait to see more of the sequal

The 3rd one, imo, is the best out of the whole series.  And yeah, the unlockable characters were pretty cooe too :P

Sometimes I'll go online on THPS3 and I'll still find a few people playing it.  I wish more people still played it online.  :(

Aaaah yes.
  • Mario Kart: Double Dash (GC)
  • Champions of Norrath (PS2)
Those are the only games I have unfortunately (b/c they are too expensive for me to afford), save for Pacman and... I really don't like Pacman because I never win. XD

We also have Zelda for our PS2 but I haven't played it so I wouldn't say it's a favorite.

But I have played games with friends and I adore wrestling/fighting games as well as car racing games in general.

My brother sold his PS2 ages ago, so I never really got the chance to play on it much. As for the GCN:
  • Timesplitters: Future Perfect
  • Timesplitters 2
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • F-Zero GX
  • Zelda: Wind Waker
Timesplitters' replay value just never runs out. I never get tired of them. Same goes for SSBM and F-Zero GX. I love the paint mode in that game. WW is good but I only go back and play it occasionally.

Emiko:  Ico is the most beautiful game I've ever played. So elegant and simple and the puzzles were perfect (I only had to look online twice for help).

Aleiav:  If you like racing games you have to play Burnout 3 -- best eva.

Lawrence: Which Timesplitters is better?  I'll put one in my gamefly queue.

Definitely Timesplitters: Future Perfect. It's story is the best by far, and it has better multiplayer-levels and the map-maker is better too. The PS2 version has online play, unlike the GCN version.

But I also heard that game isn't very good.

I don't own a PS2 or Gamecube, but I do have a PS.

Among my favourite games are: Soul Reaver, Medal of Honor 1&2, Spyro the Dragon, Castlevania SOTN, Metal Slug series, Twisted Metal series (hours of fun with my brother), MediEvil and ... yeah, those are all I can think of now.

Yeah Spryo - an oldie but a goodie. Carlos Alazraqui did the voice of Spyro, and I love him. :D He did Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life and other voices in cartoons. Legendary. But that's too OT....

The first Zelda left me running around in circles for new dungeons for ever. XD I hated it. Never did beat it. The first 2 are the only ones I never beated. They were the worst 2. Which is common. The classics usually are the worst. (don't hate me for saying this). Most of the best games in my opinion lie in the 16-bit era and today. SMB blew but was good for it's time and is still a great well programmed game, but smb 2, and 3 were much much better. 8-bit was way too generic, and we were still getting the main idea. 16 bit is when we had the general idea and kept it to that. Now games are expanding too much. I kinda' liked the snes days better. :\

A thing I noticed about most of the nes's graphics were that all sprites always consisted of 3 colors at most. I've never seen it where they have had more.

Ah yes, those games are gonna be awesome... I'm definately gonna get those as soon as they're released.

I hope Chibi Robo will make it to America and Europe though... Usually those kind of games are only released in Japan, because they expect that the game won't sell in America and/or Europe... Mainstream gamer, I blame you.

Classics usually the worst?  Screw that.  I'd rather take the original Super Mario Bros over nearly any modern 3D platformer (I far prefer it to Mario 64/DS).  That was pure gameplay back then.  Great to play as fast as possible and while drunk too.  And Super Mario Bros 2 was just above average even back then.  The third game was superb.

You'll find some did which probably used 2 or more sprites overlayed on each other.  If I had time I'd load some up and take screenshots.

The 3rd SMB was the best SMB game in my opinion. Right after that would be SM64, then after that the 2nd, then the first. I'm dissapointed now that 75% of the gaming industry has now left side scrollers and their pixel ways.

The DS and gba are now the only systems you'll probrably see sidescrollers and pixel games on normally. A few may pop up every now and then on others, but let's face it.... we're going to be leaving pixels soon forever. :(

Where's Super Mario World?  And technically could include Yoshi's Island since its labelled Super Mario World 2.  Can't say I really rate Mario 64 at all.  Its good yeah and I'd probably rather play it than SMB2 but I just find it so lacking compared to Mario 3 and World.

I been playing Vampire Chronicles on PSP enough and know that the Guilty Gear series is coming to the new handhelds too.  Though I suppose they may not count since they recycle pixel art from before.  Still, that (possibly better than) arcade port of Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper on PSP is gonna do me fine.

I'll take Zelda 3 and Super Metroid over Majora's Mask or Metroid Prime any day.

...Anyway,
  • Baten Kaitos
  • Beyond Good and Evil (Short, but sweet.)
  • Soul Calibur 2 (A freakin' must)
  • LOZ: Wind Waker
  • Resident Evil 4 (Another freakin' must)
  • GTA: San Andreas
Kizzah!

Yeah, Beyond Good & Evil is awesome, even though it is a bit on the short side. The only thing I didn't like about the game was that the only languages I could choose from were Dutch and French, and not even English! But that's just because I bought the game here in the Netherlands, I didn't really feel like going to England or America just for that game

Is the voice acting in french and dutch too?  I think I got language things on my copy of the game but I never really notice since I just naturally use english.  Damn fine game.  One of my favorites of all time.

Wow.. have to go look at some of my games.. lets see... all of these are PS@ btw.. Devil May Cry 3 was pretty damn good and kept me entertained for quite a long time, definetly SOCOM 1 and 2, they are f'in (scuse the language) brilliant! Best PS2 games ever made.

Probably a bit off topic, but there were a few classics ive always loved, and gone back and played quite a few times like (these are for N64) super smash brothers the original, Zelda 1 and 2, Conkers bad fur day, command and conquer and (these are PS1 games) Front Mission 3, Final fantasy 7.. and thats about it :P
