I am most definitely not an animator... Does anyone have any tips for smoothing out my little pinata's running animation? ![]() I'm considering changing the colours around too. It looks fine against a dark background but the head loses definition against a light one. Maybe a blue muzzle? Edit: Also, is there a hack to get the tilde over the 'n' to appear without it turning into a question mark? I suspect the gallery might do the same thing.

make the movements more sweeping. let the hind legs reach the front. Add tail and head animation.

Thanks! I think it's already looking a lot better. After your suggestion, I made a version where the hind legs ended up touching the front ones but it looked weird, so I kept a pixel of separation. ![]() I originally wanted some tail movement but couldn't figure out anything that worked in 17x17. I don't really want to make the pinata any smaller to accommodate a swooshier tail.

If you want to get smoother, an easy option is to go for more frames. Also, especially in such a small space you might wanna go much more extreme. The canvas is limiting yes, but if you can find a way to make him go up and down one pixel more, and his legs forward and back an extra pixel, you get a much more interesting animation. also, the whole thing can be sped up! I tried to fix some issues, not sure how well I did but feel free to take a look and study:

This is the first PJ challenge I'm doing and I actually rarely do animation and never actually done any in this tiny size, which feels like I should if I ever want to go professional but oh well, ya gotta start somewhere.

Thanks, Hapiel! That was very instructive. I don't think I managed to get it to look as dynamic or weighty, but it's far better than it was. ![]() Apologies for the tail being almost identical to your edit. With the small space allocated to the tail, I don't know how many other styles of motion are possible. Certainly nothing else I tried looked any good. Here's hoping for a non-animated challenge next because I need a breather just after this little thing!

Oh. Oh heck. I forgot the edit freeze rule. I swear I didn't change the submission in any way; I just removed the preview because it was bugging me. Heck. What do? The preview was just this blown-up still frame with "preview" written on it: ![]() |

They're under 'gallery' on the main page. The fourth option in the dropdown says 'weekly challenge'. Alternatively, click here.

@Pig_catapult:
Edit freeze starts once the challenge closes and voting starts, so you're still welcome to edit anything! Also, I think in general it is fine to modify the preview at any time, just not the main submission itself. |

wait, the deadline is the midnight between Sunday and Monday, not the one between Saturday and Sunday? Because if so then I still have an hour to adjust something, but I don't want to mess up my chances. EDIT2: Changed my mind and decided to just risk it. I updated the first one. I still have the first file if I have to change it back.
