I've been trying to think of a good side-project besides my website to be working on, I figure a game could be fun, I started a few vertical shooter sprites first:
Then earlier today, I was playing abit of ambermoon for amiga (insanely awesome game; artwork by nieborg even), made me want to try something with a stone menu, not much done so far on this one, just a tile and a portrait. C+C would be lovely |

No real comments for the shooter graphics but I have one for the stone portrait.
It looks like you tried to make the portrait carved out of stone but it's lacking depth. I would say to darken the shadows a little more first of. The lightsource implies that he is angled differently than the stone he is on. The only real contrast it would have are where the heights change. Namely the right and leftmost parts of his arms should not be so dark unless they are actually recessed into the stone but, it doesn't look like that. The brightest whites/greys should be seen consistently throughout the whole piece or not at all imo. Finally, the portrait would cast a shadow on the stone, which it doesn't look like it's doing. EDIT: ![]() Here is a quick revision of some areas. I don't have the time to do the whole thing but hopefully what I did can give you some ideas. I didn't do much aside from adding more to the interface and coloring the portrait (Truth is I was just too lazy to pick colors the first go-through, that happens at times) I never actually meant for the portrait to be part of the stone background, but rather infront of it. I understand what you mean about the engraving/carved part, though.
updated the stone portion abit. I'm not sure if that "speckeled" stone works or not. |
