::coughs into her hand.:: well, I'm mostly just playing around right now, though I *am* liking how this has started to come out...

I'm sure some of the shading is wrong, because I'm not entirely sure what I"m doing - and I'd love it if you'd tell me what is wrong and how to fix it, because...well...that's quite helpful. (;

After I get the basic shading done, I'm thinking of doing some pattern dithering with circles...but I'm not entirely sure yet. Also, I have absolutely NO idea how to do the hair...

some facial structure from here because a friend sent me this picture when I was about half done with what I have so far. Crazy coincidence...

perhaps it would help you to draw the entire face/head, leave off the hair, and understand the use of lightsource and THEN add the hair, enhance the skin to reflect it's presence, and THEN crop it down.

that way when you're done the picture it'll be correct and easier for you to do it next time :-)

Yeah; I tried doing that, but...the hair has an EFFECT on the lightsource. it casts shadows and alters things; it seems important to keep it there and in mind when doing the piece. Please let me know if this is wrong..?

EDIT: I finished up under the hair...

and also played with some pattern dithering on the old version, because I was bored and wanted to see if it would come out the way I thought...opinions? I like it, personally.

You might want to use another dither method, no offence, but it looks like she has some kind of skin problem. I just don't think it fits thise piece.

does it really honestly look like a skin condition, or does it look like someone might mistake it for a skin condition? because there's an intense difference between the two...I mean, personally, I don't think it looks like one, but while making it I though that someone would say that...

and what about with a slightly higher contrast and more obviously experimental palette?

I like the colors on the first better, but it's not so much that it looks like a skin condition, the dither pallete just doesn't work on this piece.

I like the first colors too. ::nods.::

and I hate to be a pain, but...could you tell me why it doesn't work, and what might work better..? I really have no jumping off point when you just tell me it "doesn't work". (;

Well, it would work for an some kind of alian creature, but it's not really the texture most peoples skin looks like. If you look at yourself in the mirror, do you look like that. You need to try to smoothen things out a bit. Here are some examples from the main site.

See how the skin looks smooth and natural, yours doesn't really look like that. Try to redither yours so it looks a little smoother.

...aah. You mean it doesn't work to duplicate a realistic skin texture, not that it doesn't work as a composition. (;

Tomorrow I'll do a plain version, I think, to see how it comes out. But personally, I think I prefer something a bit riskier.

I think the dithering is ok. If this was part of a larger, similarly shaded piece I doubt anyone would think it's skin condition. Actually the more I look at it the more I like it.
What bothers me is the groove between the nose and upper lip, I think that vertical line there is way too dark and pronounced. Also, the eyebrows, I don't like how they connect to the top of the nose. The left eyebrow could look like that because it's partially in shadow, but not the right one.

I do have a tendency to lean toward symmetry, even when that's not *really* the way light falls. |: I get it from my dad.

I played with the shading above the lip, I lightened the dark line to the left of the nose, and tried to eliminate the connection between eyebrow and nose...

old ---------------------> new. --------------->newer

edit: darkened the shadow under the hair and played with nose shading a tiny bit. also added lashes...

Blue, as I said to you, this rocks the hizzouse. :P

But I what i would suggest is, when you enlarge it, you see how the darkish pinkis color extends from her nostril (on our left side) down to the left side of her lip? I would maybe not have it below her lip because it turns out looking a bit strange when it goes back to normal. Perhaps lighten it or just  get rid of it all together?I think it's too dark.

I like your dithering personally. It gives it interesting texture in my opinion. Makes it unique. Not all pixelated people have to look the same. :)
