1) yes this is pixelart, pure pixelart, and nothing but pixelart. Done with mspaint and nothing else, pixel for pixel, with a crappy mouse.

2) what's the formulae for that system nader? what program did you use (if other than mspaint I mean) and what colour pallette?

system? uh.. i use mspaint and my brain looks at the colours black and flesh and comes up with midtones.. (the hue of the skincolour, but waaay less saturation and allso quite a bit darker)

uh what you mean system? like you make every tint -20 saturation or anything? i dont.. my eyes are my tool just look what is a good colour and then use it :D

and some tips about placement:

-you dont need to AA 45degree lines... it'll only blur them

-i usually AA the 2right 1 down lines(you understand me) with 1 colour thats roughly in between the 2 other colours (look at the right side of the upperarm to see what i mean)

-the rest is by feeling and lots of zooming in&out

and i dont use palettes.. wel.. rarely.. only if its for a specific artistic purpose, or in games. but for 'random' pixels its just choosing every time :)

I think perhaps that isn't always true. It depends on the style, and I think thick, heavy antialiasing suites a piece like this, the chunkiness is all part of the style, as is the high saturation of the midtones, I'd assume. I really don't think there is one set standard in pixel art, or any art for that matter, otherwise all art would look the same, would it not?

true as poop (poop is true.. you know that right?)

but i dont think he went for a real effect here, seeing as he didnt use his colours to make the thing smooth wisely.. ill show you in a bit what he shouldve done if he intended the effect of ''glowing edges''

edit: quicksie.. accidentally gave a bit to much glow, but what i mean to show is that he just had the same colours on every place (best noticeable on the topside of the arm) and he doesnt use his colours to smooth out. hard to explain.. just look at the 1st and 3rd

*giggle*
for starters, I'm a girl, so you start referring to me as "she" if you like.
no offense taken of course, I never SAID I was a girl or anything, but, I've never been mistaken for a male before on the net, people always said I came across as my bitchy, ditzy, feminine self.

Annnnnway, on to the picture.....

I wasn't going for glowing, I was going for midtones of colour, as you said and demonstrated, but I guess I neglected to desaturate them properly (or at all!). I've always had trouble with white skin, it's hard to make it look right but not too pale or too orange. You do it very well, I'll be taking leaves from your book from now on :)

and you don't use pallettes? so how do you have the colours then? here's what I mean by pallettes, perhaps you misunderstood me. I just draw these in mspaint so I don't "lose" the colours when I close the program and restart it later. This one happens to have a shortened pallette of greys and yellows. Usually they have more different colours per pallette (or "steps" in the pallette, as I call it) but this is what I could find to post in 10 seconds :)

So do you use pallettes and can I see the one you used to correct my pic?

i hope this is what you mean by palettes:

in this case yes, i use palettes, as in that i keep using the same colours in the whole piece. but i do not use pre-set palettes. as in ''oh im gonna make a plant'' and i grab my green palette. every time i make a piece, the colours are all hand picked

and i did not change that much about your colours, i just made the darkest skintones a bit less saturated, and i made the greys follow more even steps between shades

thanks! thats exactly what I meant!
And I DO keep certain pallettes around, really nice leafy green one I came up with a few years ago has served me really well many time. I have a big bmp file I keep them all in for easy access :)
