I dunno if anyone did something like that, but I just thought it could be a good idea:
Sometimes I wonder how I should shade different materials; at the moment I'm trying to figure out a good shading method to shade Ice. So I wondered if it would be a good idea, if we made small pixeled material objects. Like a cylinder in [insert fancy material here].over the time there could spawn a pretty vast collection of shading types, that could come in handy, if you realy have no idea how to shade something. If I'm not the only one thinking this is a good idea, I could provide a template. here's the ever expanding list of materials: stone(floor) rock shiny metal dull metal brushed metal rusty metal gold plastic grass wood glass ice molten rock smoke fire flesh skin fur here's the large template: ![]() small one will follow. hmm I like it!
Perhaps you should make a list of materials so people can get started, and add on to the list as we go |

Good thought...I actually have an ice block (four color) that I could clip out and post if you want....Don't know what level of realism you're wanting though... |

I mean there's no reason why there could be 3 to 10 types the same material in different styles. good thought about the list, I'll write some up and put them in the first post. Good idea, makes for cool reference material, color choices and style choices. Great for when bored too.
@Squirrel, if it takes off there's a 'goldie' star in it for you :D Edited by jalonso - 12 October 2007 at 2:20pm |

Just keep in mind that for best results, Saturation values should very as well as Value.
Materials in real world reflect light differently in different directions due to the surface characteristics. Rubber is pitted and reflects light in all directions this means that the Specular value is lower. I've been studying OGL materials very closely and you gain an appreciation for material properties. Artists somethimes can't understand why things appear the way they do and my interest in graphics programming has helped immensly with understanding how materials work. The more pitted or rough the surface the less light will be reflected back to the viewer's eye. Meaning more midtons (more colors or more dithering whatever you prefer).

No worries. Thanks for considering it.
I think people need to think in terms of materials rather than "colors".
For example chrome is a material not a color.
Colors are concpts like
-red
-blue
-teal
where Materials are
-chrome
-gold
-clay
I must applaud your efforts to make a general material dictionary. I'm currently working on a 3D materials library for myself.

More to come, hopefully.

I like this idea.
There should me a wide verity of shapes(including some complex ones), and we do each material in every shape. After we've collected a large amount of shaded shapes, someone could use them in a tutorial. |
