anatomy of the character is weak, for both torso and haircut. I suggest you to use a good reference in order to get the basics, wich seems to be the problem, and don't move to the next step till they got in the exact proportion.
P.S.: yep, I forgot we have this exelent site for anatomy references Edited by Metaru - 01 January 2008 at 9:09am |

Hello Hidde,
Search more references when you can't find one specific. This is nice when you want to use formulas instead of real life images. Watch the video to find out the position of the head to the torso and the position of the arm. There are a lot of interesting videos to watch, but unfortunately not all 263 videos that were made. You have to buy the most of them! Best regards from M.E. |

no. the shape of the chest are and torso in general is like... as if he melted. do you practice judo? look at your own body. you'll never find the exact reference, since they'll just give you hints and guidelines on how each element is placed/aligned, and this means that you have to, usually, check a picture for each part of the image(in this case, shoulders, hand, arm, chest, abs and face)
remember, they are references. or else, you would be tracing. |

Hello Hidde,
Maybe it would be better if you first would draw the figure with pencil. Take for instance this (Nudity!) from the website that Metaru has adviced flip it horizontaly and draw it. It comes close to what you are trying to do and while drawing it you can maybe find the proportions for your pixel..... Best regards from M.E. |

Hi Hidde,
You still have incorrect proportions. There is a head height between the chin and his breasts and the elbow is around his navel. This is an indication on an older piece you made, but I was hoping that you could figure it out with the reference given. ![]() Hope this helps. Best regards from M.E. |

Hello Hidde,
Did you watch the video on youtube that I included in one of the previous posts? Try to see the body in proportional relation to eachother. For instance the body is (*ROUGHLY*) about 8 heads. Measure the length of your figure too the head size. The torso is better as it indeed is one headlength below the head. But your arm starts way to soon, The width of your head is far larger than the width of your body. Hands should come below the shorts. Don't work too much on detail. Get the proportions right first. Best regards from M.E. |

When drawing human figures, whether realistically or anime/manga style, you need to have an understanding of basic anatomy. Remember the How to draw Characters (Male) and (Female) tutorials? The third step is to draw the anatomy of the figure, but without basic understanding, it’s really quite a difficult task to accomplish. But never fear. Although the body is a complex piece of biology, it can be simplified so that everyone can understand. When drawing the body, you need to at least have an understanding of the major skeletal muscles. These include biceps, calves and abdominal muscles as well as others that you might not know the names of. In the example below, I have labeled the major skeletal muscles. Although you don’t really need to know the names, other tutorials in books and sites may use these scientific terms, so it’s also good to remember a few. The major information you should get out of the example below, is not actually the names of the skeletal muscles, but the locations of certain parts of the body. These are labeled in bold. It is also good to spend a bit time remembering how the body looks and how to draw certain parts, so go wild. Also notice how the waist is almost as thick as the shoulders, which is one of the key features that make men and women different. When drawing the male body, it is usually a good idea to define the muscles.
Finally, if you want to draw the body, you need to know the average length of certain body parts. From previous tutorials, we have learned that the hand is big enough to cover the face and the adult foot is equivalent to one head. For the length of the legs, look at the Body Proportions tutorial. Usually for adults, the thights and the calves are both one and a half heads each. Sometimes it’s longer, depending on the height of the character. What we haven’t covered though, is the length of the arm. Usually the Upper Arm is equivalent to one and a half heads. The upper arm consists of the shoulder all the way down to the elbow. The Lower Arm is equivalent to two heads. The lower arm consists of from the elbow all the way down to the hand (with straightened fingers). Examples are below. I hope you learned something today whilst reading this tutorial on the Male Body as well as Basic Anatomy for Drawing - Realistic and Anime. Remember to keep practicing, especially since the human body is quite complex, with many different poses and angles that can be drawn. Bye for now ^^ Now there are no excuses: i've posted the whole tutorial here. read it, study it, and show us how courageous you are agaisnt the evils of human anatomy. Maybe no comments :P But for the people who want to see how far I am so far... I'm making the human smaller because I think it's better to begin small and than go bigger. And because this is my first humanly art I'm going to make him smaller. ![]() |

Hidde,
Please, please pretty please make a proportional correct figure before you do anything else. Metaru gave you excellent advice, yet it seems you aren't listening. The body is divided somewhere along the waist area. So the number of heads on top should be the same at the bottom. ![]() Count the heads, read the posts and adjust the picture please! Groetjes van, Best regards from M.E. |

you do realise there is a point in pixelart you pretty much have to abandon traditional proportions to get at least some detail in there?
