I'm Akseli "Core Xii" Tarkkio, a young Finnish game designer and programmer, and most of the time I find myself wanting to develop games but lacking the necessary resources to do so. Namely, graphics.

Long ago I established a dev team with a bunch of friends, called Inner Core Productions at the time. As it happens, nowadays I'm the only one with the free time required for dedicated development. People are busy with their lives and school, and as an aspiring developer with uncertain futures and business models, rather attend school and work than this.

My situation however is different. I have all the time in the world to dedicate myself to it.

I'm mainly a designer, but also a programmer and a composer. The thing I lack the most is graphics, because though I've done pixel art in the past, it's not really my thing. Also, I need someone to just talk to about my ideas and concepts - Creative feedback from like-minded people. It helps to keep me inspired and motivated.

What I'm looking for is a talented pixel artist, willing to work on projects as a hobby, yet dedicated, with a possibility of turning into a full-time job in the (perhaps surprisingly close) future.

Previously I used to work with Nathan "Adarias" Christie in a large number of projects, but he's occupied getting himself a degree. So I need a substitute. (Understand this requires a similar level of talent)

Members I guess can just reply, for anyone else interested my e-mail is corexiithebot@gmail.com, but remove "thebot" from the address.

There are literally dozens of projects waiting to be realized, from almost every imaginable genre and style, with both new and exciting ideas, and tried and true concepts, revisited and improved. If you have the time and the talent, please, I need your help!

Especially because this is unpaid (atleast for now but I personally would not take the chance, no offence to you).

Sorry, but I think you are better off with a lower skill level. One that would do some unpaid work to start off their career, to get known.

Well, anyone's free to apply, but I can't just accept any kind of quality. I understand not a lot of people are willing to make an investment with no certain payback but on the other hand, if Adarias trusted in my abilities, shouldn't that tell you something...?

Hm, now that I think about it. Yeah.

But I think you need to clarify the following:

How long do you think it will be before you can start paying? How far are you willing to go in terms of talent (My level, or otherwise)? Some more info on projects?

Good luck anyway! I hope you find someone.

I have interested parties already and there's a lot of investors for Finnish game development, but there's something I need to get out of the way first. Likely, the second or third project might be commercial.

You're not a bad artist, you can do a lot of different styles and that's very good. However your animations are a bit lacking, we'd need to look into that. Smooth animations are an important factor.

Well like I said there's literally projects from almost every genre and style... The only thing we don't really do is fantasy, the kind with dragons and magic and stuff. My philosophy is to invent new and experimental concepts, or to perfect an existing idea the way it should've been done.

For a couple of examples there's Core Wars, the longest term project I've been working on, a real-time strategy game that attempts to address all the issues that have been plaguing the RTS genre since the very beginning.

(very old mockup by Adarias)

Or Colorblind (working title), which is an artistic platformer and exploration game set in a very distinct graphical theme, where the entire game looks like a silhouette.

(early mockup, lousy one at that)

There's literally over a dozen projects, with more spawning on a monthly basis. The curse of a creative game designer

Well just to let you know I'm not available at the moment. I work for Battlephase.com.

But all in all very interesting. Glad you took the time to answer my questions.

Hi Core_12,

Not that I'm available as well, but I would like to
point out that I really like the exploration game
done in silhouette. I've thought of this kind of
game myself (non-violent!!!) but my current
project will take about seven more years (or more..)

In case you would like to have a alpha/beta-tester
I am however free for that!

I wish you the very best with your projects!

Best regards from

M.E.

I hear you! I am in the same boat!

As a "game programmer" myself, it's hard to find willing and talented artists with matching interests as far as game design goes! Also, I understand that's it's not very reasonable for me to expect someone to just create graphics for me with the hope I am programming something cool with it...
