![]() Topic: Where to begin...?Posted: 16 October 2008 at 6:02am |

So I've had this crazy idea for a while now about learning to sketch and learning different kinds of art and what not ever since a friend of mine started going to school for it. She sketched this portrait of me, and it was almost scary how realistic it was.. and ever since then I've wanted to be able to do something like that.
This is where my problem comes into play, and I've noticed since fooling around in MS Paint, that it isn't just from paper and pencil. I sit there and I just look at the blank page.. , I might add a little line or something.. or start to make a shape.. but it always ends up getting erased because I'm not satisfied or try and figure out what I'm trying to create.Has anyone else every had this trouble? That same friend I mentioned told me to scribble all over the first page and just let it all out.. but it didn't do anything for me really. I figure starting out with something small would be best.. I've seen videos and read tutorials about all kinds of different techniques but I can't seem to find out what to apply them to. Basically is anyone else afraid of a blank page? Any kind of input, solutions, or what you all seem to call c+c (if it applies) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Many of us faced the "stared at a blank page for hours" dilemma.
Sometimes you don't get what you want, sometimes you have to settle for something crappy over nothing great. Look at my sig, they are both crappy. But I ended up making them simply because I wanted to get something done for a change and was sick and tired of "the blank screen". Go draw some random little scribbles, it might not be the masterpiece you might have wanted, but at least it might jump start your creativity. (I should probably do the whole "physician heal thyself" thing and take my own advice at this point.) ![]() ![]() |

This can be easily solved.
Get an idea, any will do. Then work on that. As you do other ideas come to mind and you place them or add them. Its cool to delete, restart, modify, expand and truly 'create' by building, rather than pre-planned visions that only serve to frustrate and stiffle creativity as a general rule. |

Its not that bad to remove things, but try to look very very good at it, see what is not that bad and can be made better, remove the rest but start with the stuff you already got. Repeat and repeat and repeat that and you will end up with something, if you save the good parts each times :)

Alright will do, thanks for the help, I'd really like to try this and am just going to finish something I started for experience sake. Not because I'm going for the hall of fame. I have some ideas so I'll try a couple, hopefully they'll be in the WIP thread soon.
Thanks again! :) |

Ok so I've been piddling around in MS paint for a little while, and since I don't have a tablet I have to use my mouse. The question I have is about magnification. I've noticed its easy to see the pixels in 8 and 10x.. but when zoomed out is very very small. Also when zoomed out its hard to get the details in because the area is so vast. Is there a happy medium with this, or is it best to be zoomed in mostly and just work in areas?

Make it as small as you want. Both the gallery and this forum have a magnifying glass. Nothing escapes our scrutiny.
![]() Just play it by ear and see where it goes. |

Another thing I've been having troubles with is using the black outlining.. Whenever I'm creating something its almost like the black on white is too much. How does everyone else usually start there projects?

Also I was curious I know that when using paper and pencil especially at least from what I've read that using a line of motion to start a sketch is important because its gets you an idea of how the piece will move. Would this work similar in pixelart?

For the first question, it all really depends. Try doing a 2 color piece, black and white, it should give you some helpful insight on those kinds of issues.
And I start my project with a blank screen. (Guess you should have been more specific on that question, huh?) ![]() As for the second question, it works for some people, doesn't for others. Only one way to find out eh? ![]() |

Yeah, if I already know what I'm doing then I start out with a certain palette. (Weekly challenges and stuff.)
Otherwise I take the "play it by ear and see where it goes" approach. ![]() |

I mostly start with a grey background and black lines.
