In the FAQ there is a point that states:
Q. Why aren't my pixels as good as [Some other guy]?
A. Because you aren’t them.  Everybody is different, has different styles, techniques, tastes, etc…  If you strive to be like someone else, then you might as well quit pixel art, because it takes some individualism and creativity.

However the message I got about not gathering a big enough score tells me that unless I know people on the board, my 'individualism and creativity' means squat. I assumed that having a 'Gallery' tab under my name meant that I could display my own work in my own profile, but it would seem that that is not the case? Do I require other peoples' biased oppinions to tell me that I am a good or bad spriter?

I spend a great deal of time to make my work look to the best of my current abilities and I feel that method of 'filtering' newcomers is detrimental to their confidence.

A necessary party of the educational process of becoming an artist is getting beat the heck down at least once in your life. Though the idea of a flowery, always-positive community of artists is a fine notion, it is hardly as informative as something more akin to a school of hard knocks.

Deviantart is flowery. There is a phenomenal amount of absolute crap on that website that people will lovingly rate "15/5!" or "I <3 IT FAV X10" and though that's cool, it gets/got to the point where you can't make objective criticism without it being taken like you're a flaming asshole from the pits of hell.

"Do I require other peoples' biased opinions to tell me that I am a good or bad spriter?"

As for that, I promise you your own opinion of your work is much more biased than anyone else's. So, yes, you need someone else's unbiased opinion to give you a fair view on how well you can sprite, what you should look at/work on etc.

But whatever! For the most part, PJ is a happy group of helpful people! Stick around and you'll learn oodles, but be ready for potentially unhappy feedback every once in a while!
