At the moment I use MSPaint but it appears that the pros don't use this program so much. Could you guys suggest any decent (and hopefully free) programs designed for pixel art for me?

I'm a beginner at pixel art so Paint is fine for the moment.

Just stick with paint. It's what most of us use anyway. That or GraphicsGale.

Ok cool, I've heard of graphics gale, good for quickly making animated gifs but you have to pay for that.

Use unFreeze to animate gifs you made with paint.

I recommend GraphicsGale. It's almost as easy as Paint to use and it has hotkeys and you can undo more. That's why I'm using it.. And it's FREE!.

some other free programs can be: grafx2 and gimp (which has some animation extensions) but the latter is quite complex for a beginner

I actually work with Photoshop (but that´s because I use it almost everyday in college) but as Lollige said MTpaint is one of the best programs that I saw...
