there'sactually 2 versions of the gameboy palette. there's the one were using and there's a real green version. which is the one his referring two. but this is the better one out of the two in my opinion.

AFAIK the original gameboy changed between brown and green depending on the light you were in, but was never gray. The gray was an improvement of the gameboy pocket so much as I remember, and I actually was annoyed by it and stuck to my big gray-outside green-screened monster until the GBC came out...
Not that it's worth arguing over. I'm sure there are a lot of different screen colors with different manufacturing dates and individual histories of each machine, and let's not forget the contrast dial making the shade values (which I think are more important than the hues since this is monochrome...) almost arbitrary... |

I'm a little confused- probably cause i think too much.
Does the game have to resemble an old game like the real GB games- or can it be impossible like a 3d looking one - hypothetically speaking. ? |

It says minimum of 2 screens. Does one of them have to be a title screen?
So shouldn't the canvas size then be a minimum of either 320 x 144 or 160 x 288? Edited by greenraven - 27 April 2009 at 10:03am |

Well, let's say you want to have 1 pixel transparent between screens then the canvas sixe will be slightly bigger. What if you wish to have a 2px border between screens?...therefore, each screen has a fixed size but your canvas can vary. Edited by jalonso - 27 April 2009 at 11:32am |

El Sato that piece looks like you just recolored sprites already in your game, and made a little piece out of it. not original in the slightest sense of the word.

ohh ok.with your skill it would have been awesome to see a more original idea. but something that annoys me about that piece and the one you posted before is your character would look better if he was behind the tileset he lands on.

Right! As long as you use the palette and minimum screens then I think you can make anything. I'm doing the no-more-than 10 3-color sprites on a line rule just for fun. I might actually be breaking the rules though if text letters and boxes count as sprites... ![]() |

Loving this challenge. Working with the gameboy palette is one of my favorite things to do. I had an idea for a game with this palette in mind, so I figured this challenge to be a good excuse to start making assets for it. It's supposed to be a Bangai-O sort of game. Just lots of missiles and explosions :P
WIP: ![]() I did some things not possible with the hardware (like the smoke-trail from the missiles), but I guess that's alright? Edited by Pietepiet - 28 April 2009 at 1:26pm |

Ergg - very nice!
Jalonzo - I like. But I can't make out what's going on with the image on the right - is it a mushroom with a face? Something about it just doesn't add up,,, Not sure if I will get to finish this or not... |

Even seeing the reference - which in my eyes isn't very clear.
- I think you need to get extra definition. This edit might help? I presumed it is a hollowed body and tried to make it more like that - made one of uprights more arm like and tried to give the boats some depth... Also I didn't edit it but the round highlight on the hat is too round and a bit eye catching. Edited by willfaulds - 29 April 2009 at 1:32pm |

Some really nice and promising entries in here !
![]() Here's what I got so far, the fireplace isn't done yet, and the font is somewhat hard to read, I need to fix that later... However, I actually try to stick as close to the hardware restrictions as I can, but i'll probably break them at some points. Hopefully, i'll finish this in time, as I wanted to to at least 3 more screens and I still need to finish the title screen... |

Anyway, got myself a title and ingame. Probably going to do one or two more ingame shots. Tried to stay as close as possible to gameboy restrictions. ![]() And I did two versions of the title. I need suggestions on which to go with: ![]() Any suggestions on stuff to improve would be greatly appreciated. Edit: ... photobucket isn't agreeing with my images.
