I think you have to use those boxes provided to draw your creature in it, but you may add a background WITHIN the boxes if you wish - that's what I understood from the rules. |

I kinda wish I'd come up with the spider idea first. It looks frickin' cool. As for the female, you might have the skull turned the other way, and a white color instead? Also, since the females are bigger, I think some longer, more stinger-esque legs would look good, and maybe have the jawbone hanging off the back, like a protector for its spinneret.

I have a question about this... you said no humanoids, so that mean nothing human inspired at all.... only animal looking type of creatures basically... why? most of the coolest original races are humanoid based imo... well, I'll participate, I just want to make sure I know and understand exactly.

@Antifarea:
Which would you would find more interesting - a standard humanoid creature or a 9-winged reptile with sweet potatoes for limbs? Out of all possible forms a creature could take why just limit yourself to something that looks like a human? Think outside the square :P Edited by skamocore - 18 May 2009 at 7:59pm |

thx for your ideas !
but i think that braindamage's idea could be really refreshing and unexpected =D so i'll see what i'll do :p and i've finished my male character and @Arrow, in my mind it's not some kind of spider, it's more like a crab which would live into monkey skull :D so don't worry and just do what you feel :) |

(Then it could lay eggs inside the other being and they would burst out of it... I know, this idea has been used too many times before ;P) |

![]() Here's a first sketch. I might not even have time to do this contest entry, but I'll throw my idea out there anyway. I'm thinking of going for a symbiotic relationship with the female being dramatically different from the male. Each of them needs one another to survive. The males are small and attach to the females neck to gain extra protection from its size and also to impregnate it. This way the females gain an extra sense by using the males eyes as well as gaining more heightened thought processes through the males brain. Before melding with a male the females activities are controlled mainly by primordial synaptic impulses to find food and a male to bond with. Why Noah left this magnificent creature behind? Because there were only two left, but the stupid git thought it was only a single animal doomed for extinction anyway so he left the poor couple to drown. Still haven't thought of a name for it though. Edited by Nether - 19 May 2009 at 4:49am |

@greenbucket : if you turn it a bit more, maybe it coulb be easier so shw the other claw but if you let it the way it is, maybe just a black line betwwen the claw and the head could be enough (i'm not sure, but that's how i feel it) |

@nether : isn't the bottom of the female (which is in male box) a bit too small ? (i don't find the right word ... my english sucks XD) i mean i find it's too thin. but i don't know if this thing will always be here after you do the color.
but i have to say something, it's such a shame that you can't show to the challenge your 2in1 monster (i mean the two of them together) @dpixel : nice :D @monotov : i find the color a bit too flashy for example on the back of the male character, and i think, there is a lack of legs ^^ Edited by hordus - 19 May 2009 at 7:31am |

It still needs some finishing touches but I'll wait till I can get off this dark monitor...then I can do the eyes.
@monotov : looks good as for suggestions....hmmm. Maybe a longer tail on the male? A size difference? What about some ears?

I'm not sure whether i'm taking this too seriously. With all evolution and that, i thought that the male and female looked generally the same, despite some alterations. Dpixel is the closest, to what i think is male and female of a creature.
With jalonso's, it's good but i don't really think it sceams male and female. I would think that they're from the same environment, not the same species/sub species

![]() Just throwing out ideas here. My thought on this was a vicious flying squirrel type thing. It can fling itself around like a monkey. It's got plenty of teeth and claws to grab on to just about anything.
Very heavy WIP.
This is precisely why Noah forgot this species. He couldn't tell they were a pair. Too funny. |

![]() Blueball Crab (Vulvatestis Crustacean) Description The male Blueball crab is 4 inches long. Males travel in schools are are often victims to premature death. Female Blueball Crabs, also known as the Vulva Crab, is an elusive creature and often vicious to the male. They are almost eight times in size of the male and when carrying eggs will be as much as 2000% bigger, after birth females usually remain big and fat. The female comes in many colors and sizes. The mating dance includes a lot of cuddling and even then timing is crucial. The male crab will often lose its limbs in the tight spaces of the female, their limbs never grow back and its rare to see males with limbs. Without limbs mating is even more difficult and males will often turn a blue purple color from the frustration. The genus Vulvatestis Crustecean are not edible but it is not unknown for this to happen occasionally. In some cultures it is considered a delicacy and highly sought out. Some cultures simply prefer to suck on them for the juices but not eat the actual creature. *Disqualification is now complete, I'm off to make an iso scene ![]() Edited by jalonso - 19 May 2009 at 12:31pm |

Jalonso, that entry is the whole package. It's a marvellous piece. And with that, I'll take my leave. In all seriousness, it's a very nice piece of work. Unfortunately I can't see a winner coming over that unless they go the whole hog and including a background. |

Well, dpixel, it looks nice, but I think we all would much rather love to see something new for one of the sides. It doesn't have to be a new creature by any means, but a different pose, and not just a rotated, and slightly edited one.
The background doesn't really seem to help anything at all right now, it just kind of hurts the eyes. Hope you'll improve it though. Start refining. Keep up the good work. |

@dpixel, Don't let any entry stop you from your own, k.
I find the BG dominates the creatures a little too much. Maybe a shadow beneath them will add enough difference for them to stand out. Another thing is that using white like you have on the teeth and nails never quite works well. Try a grey or blue-grey. This goes for blood too, often a purple or wine colored red works much better than RED. |

Here we have the pixellus:
![]() What we are observing here is the natural habitats of both the male and the female pixellus. The male is an extremely shy creature, but if you look very closely you can see him hiding in the corner of the image. He may be hard to spot at first, but that is because of his excellent camoflage; he can hide amongst any colour background, as long as it's blue. Now on the other hand, we have the the female pixellus. She is the complete opposite to the male and comes in a wide variety of pinks. She will jump at any chance to get right in front of the camera. As you can tell in this image, she has jumped at the chance to get right in front of the camera. There are also 9 fluorescent disco elephants dancing in the background, but alas, you cannot see them as the pixullus is standing right in front of the camera, sigh. |

@hyperbear: I'm still very new to pixel art and so my critique isn't worth much, but I'd say that the front two tentacles look a little odd sticking out forwards like that while the rest are flowing backwards. Other than that, it looks great so far.
Here's my male species. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but it feels over-dithered. Any suggestions on how I could improve on that, or on anything else? ![]() |
