Hi everyone. I just started making some pixel art for a game I'll hopefully release to the iphone. I thought it was pretty good, but then I found this site and saw some of the work on here... some of it is phenomenal. Now I'm pretty sure mine has a lot of room left for improvement.
- Well, it's been hours and no reply, so I guess no one really cares about what they're for, hehe. Well, I'll put one up anyway. I've never done any pixel art before, so any suggestions anyone has are welcome. ![]() Edited by TotalPigeon - 25 May 2009 at 11:24am |

Haha don't be desperate, I'm sure this isn't any life or death matter... well, I can't really be editing nor fixing people's pieces all the time, surely I can try and see if I can do an edit (if I have nothing else to do of course) to help... well, the sprite looks nice so far, but what's killing it is the color saturation, the colors are too strong, I bet if I shut down my monitor it will actually glow on me haha... so yeah, that's something to watch out for, at least on this sprite (you have to show some of your other works so we can see if you are doing the same thing over and over, not just this one)...
I recommend toning the colors down, if it looks too bad, use another palette. EDIT POST: Well I did a palette swap... ![]() You can keep that palette for all your spriting needs, you'll have to come up with ways to make your sprites look right. Edited by Antifarea - 26 May 2009 at 9:38am |

Got very tired in the end, but thought I could give my own edit to you
to show what I think is needed for a beat-em up sprite. First of, I
dont like the colors, at all. I think it makes it alot more interesting
to stick with some more realistic colors instead of taking something
like its direktly from a childs craonbox... Also, if you are planing to
animate this just so you know: fewer colors make it hell of a lot
easyer, so the fewer the better if you dont have to much experiance in
animation.
Then the pose it a bit, or very, odd. Is this the pose it has when it fights? if so, its very wired that its face foward. Should rather be facing the opponent dont you think?. Also think you need to putin more character in to your sprites, esspecialy becose they are fighter game characters. Right now your "knight" is very very boring... and does not feel like a character that i can relate a story to or want to play in the first place, he feels more like one of those generic npc guards you can find in any RPG game that always die alot. Add some more charisma, have something on him that makes it alot more interesting, can be anything to a strong skull symbol, fire on the shoulders, making him without a helmet or having him half black half white, there are alot of things to play with. Just have some more fun with it really. Also, style wise I think you need something that makes it a bit more "special" the way you put your pixels is not very intetesting, and you should play alot more of diffrent styles and way of making it. Hope that helps a bit, also, my smal fast edit (changed the right arm, the legs, the helmet, changed and reduced the colors) not to many changes otherwise of the hole, the redering stays the same, most of the shapes aswell. Did not add anything to "extra" to define him more then the change of the legs. ![]() |

Thanks for the replies. Heh, just trying to be polite. Anyway, yes, I realised that it wasn't going to be a particularly useful pose shortly after mostly finishing with it, so I made a sequence to get him to turn around, which was educational. But I liked the look of this picture the most, so I put this one up.
I can see what you both mean with the colours, they do glare rather painfully in retrospect. I'll play around with the palette and see what I can achieve. I did have an idea for giving him individuality, but after a period of experimentation I came to the conclusion that my ambitions currently outstrip my ability. Claes, your edit to the armour is very nice, I can see some clever ways in which you've improved the look, and the removal of the glint I had is barely noticeable. I'll keep them in mind when I go over it. |
