I know I have alot of WIPS, but I work on them in turn. I try to stick to two at a time. Ok. Here is a floorplan for the castle, so you get a basic idea of whats to come, note this is onlt the first floor. There are roughly 5 more I think.![]() Here is what I have so far of the (left?) wall. Much, much thanks to jalonso for a lot of help getting the bricks looking correct.
The thing I'm stuck on is the top of the wall (on the outside). It's suppose to be stone, but I can't get it right. Any suggestions? CC welcome.
Edit: Whoops. Forgot the wall. heh-heh. :)\

Does that image show top of the wall on the outside? All I see is a basic layout for what's to be.
We can't help you without first seeing the unsatisfactory attempt. |

whoops. sorry bout that. sidetracked. One other small thing is the corner stones seem to be erupting through the wall. I want them lumpy, really rocky and lumpy, but i can't make it look "clean cut" so it fits in. Basically I want it neat and messy at the same time... >.<

Are you using the floor plan as some kind of role playing game?

someone suggested red tiles and i tried that. The only problen is that the tiles would likely get smashed to bits is say i minotaur came up against it (luckily they happen to pretty much isolate themselves to one area of the globe and rarely move very far from there). Also this is castle full of vampires.
Here is with some red tiles:
![]() Yes This is for a game, but more like a mix between runescape. adventurequest, habbo hotel, and a tiny bit of world of warcraft (general controls).

the green blob is some strange discharge from a pipe. kind of radioactive looking. It's the best I gould do without changing the pallette. the bluegreen blob is the best I could do for moss with the current pallette.I have to add some more plant greens. 4 or 5 colors probably. I currently have 62 colors, I want to keep it under 120 (for the entire game)
I've also been told to try hollowing it out a little into another section for soldiers. it would make it relitivly easier, but would it be a good idea?

To me red tile roofs are more Mediterranean and tropical in feel. Add to this that your reds are very saturated just does not look appealing to me. Roof tiles may be green or blue so maybe thats an option if you really like them. I think roofs however should not be a 'brick-like- pattern like tiles have because it just bores the eye/mind. Anyhoo...
Roofs MUST overhang walls! All colors from your palette. ![]() Edited by jalonso - 08 June 2009 at 11:06am |

makes sense. I'll figure something out. I like the wasy the first, second, and tfourth examples look on the wall there (I'm not even gunna attempt the heads). I can't find any good reference images on google. Maybe I've just been searching the wrong stuff...
Update comming soon.
Edit: I like the roofs on the osaka castle. I think I might be able to get an interesting blend...
the foliage and landscaping around it too mught come in handy.

Damn Jal, did you just whip out those amazing edits so quickly?
That's unbelievable. But, yeah. Everything looks great. Just try to think outside the box a little bit, and use color schemes that appeal to the eye, and make the piece less boring and monotonous. |

Architecture is a funny thing. It either makes sense or it does not.
Be careful mixing Asian with castles. Its doable but can easily be a mess. @Dr D, iso is easy for me :| Edited by jalonso - 08 June 2009 at 2:25pm |

Haha, pixels are easy for you.
Also, the pattern of splotches on the wall are quite repetitive. Edited by Dr D - 08 June 2009 at 2:42pm |

I'm going to use your example roof as a template, then morph it into the style I'm going for, once I've figured out what I want that is. I'm having trouble with one section of the wall, as listed on the picture. new small structure built onto the wall. not sure where I'm going with it anymore. maybe a way to deliver troops ot the outside of the wall directly. I really don't know anymore. I'm tired, it's late here, maybe I'll remember by tomm.

About your corner, it's going into a crevass that's only 1 tile wide, from the part of the wall that juts out on the right, whereas the roof pieces seem to stretch out 2 tiles outwards from the wall. That won't work.
You're either going to have to make the roof only extend out 1 tile there, or change the floor plans around to accommodate it. That might or might not be where your problem comes from, as your roofs push your wall down a few pixels, thinking 2-dimensionally. You can see what I'm talking about, I marked it in red. ![]() Also, the cyan points should all be at the same elevation, same goes for all the yellow ones. You're making them appear as if they're not. Fixing the first problem will probably remedy this. It's just a bit too 'cluttered' in that area right now. Edit: Oops, JPEG'd. Shouldn't matter, anyways, though. Edited by Dr D - 08 June 2009 at 9:14pm |

just to let you know, we advise not taking artwork directly from
another artist. jalonso made an edit for you to study and learn from,
you're not improving your art by taking the roof directly.

Ok. i solved that problem. :)
![]() I sketched a rough outline for rocks at the base of the castle. they cover up a quite a bit... I'm wondering if I should lower them.
I'm hoping to make the rocks sharply slope upwarsa a little ways, somewhat like a huge clawed beast dragged it's claws up along them. I'm going to look for some good refrence pictures and sleep on this.
Edit: @cure: yes, I know. As i said on pixelation, it's only temporary. I plan on fixing that/ redoing the roof. I'm only using jalonso's edit for a base on colors and general shape... :)
Edit: I've got the roof down. It might change a little as I do the rest of the castle. Edited by nomadic_cupcake - 09 June 2009 at 2:56pm |

I'm thinking canvas awnings with side braces might work. Hard to describe so, I'm gonna make another edit for you with this solution for all those weird areas and corners. It will also account for different slopes too. Additionally because they are canvas they will allow you to have some torn up or burnt or other for variation.

Ok. I did the roof and some other stuff.
![]() The rocks will be kinds difficult. I can't find any good reference images to use either.
In the process of loking for reference images i found this: [my son sanctuary]
Would stuff like this be a good thing to incorperate in the castle, or would it be pushing it?

Oh, the roofs looks fantastic :D
I'm not even gonna bother with the awning edit. Try the rocks as you see fit first. Using those refs might work, try it. |

Thanks.
I sketched out what I'm going for on the rocks. It helps with the shape, but I have almost no idea how to texture them.
Saddly I won't get any chance to work on it for the next 9 hours.
EDIT: ok, I got a little work done, I gatta have a break from this thing for a little bit... I wanna make a quick mockup of the game... or at least the UI.

Yep, very nice piece ;)
As a french, I know that a lot of castles in france had douvre. I'm not sure of the word so I explain : it is kind of a big hole full of water in front of the walls. I think it'll look better, and it will add some colors ;) But good work anyways ;) |

you are talking about a moat. castles often used the surrounding environment as part of the defensive structures, this could be water(a moat), an abyss lower terain or even loose sand. i think these rocks are okay. but to give it a more transylvanian atmosfre i think the castle could be a little more elevated.

ok. The castle is located on a cliff beside a very large river. I'll add more height and some water to this side.
I'm having trouble figuring out how to texturize the rocks at the bottom... I'll post an update soon.
