![]() Topic: My first pixel art animation!Posted: 02 October 2009 at 12:14pm |

Hi!
I want to show you my very first pixel art animation!
It was done frame by frame in mspaint, and put together as
an animation in flash.
It is supposed to be for my project in Java.
I'm developing an RTS game for my finals and I simply
love the "little character" style so I went for it:
It was really too hard to animate stuff in mspaint.
I couldnt see the previous frame, I had no layers and only up to 3 redos,
and there is no timeline or any way to check my animation,
so I found myself spending something like half of the time just moving
stuff around and fixing pixel sized errors so it would look better animated.
It would be awsome if anyone could recommend a nice, user friendly
free software to help me make pixel art animations!
It would also be awsome to get some constructive comments!
Thanks in advanced!

Your animation displays full screen: not the best option... Besides, the host you use is a hassle to users.
Look in the PJ gallery header, links / tutorials, you'll probably find the information you need. You can also use the forum search engine, I'm sure the question has been asked countless times. I'm not using free pixelling software, so I can't answer directly! |

Thanks for the comment.
The problem is whenever I export to GIF the animation is
really slow - something like 8 FPS instead of 12 and no matter what
FPS I try to export it as, its always slow.
If I could export to GIF I could probobally upload it to a better
image hosting service, but its an SWF.
Anyways, I've managed to upload it as a GIF:
Any constructive comments?

Nice work so far. A couple suggestions:
1- It's really hard to tell, so it hardly matters, but make sure that when his left arm is forward his right leg is forward, and when his right arm is forward his left leg is forward (in other words, don't swing arm and leg of the same side together). I'm confused as to which leg is which in most frames. Frames 2 and 8 seem to both have the right leg straight, which can't be right. One strategy would be to make the far leg darker or less saturated. This depends on your light source, though, which also is a little ambiguous. 2 - the animation itself is pretty smooth! I do think his hat should flop slightly, and the the feather should wave. Make sure the reaction happens AFTER the cause (so the frame after a foot strikes the ground, the hat should show a reaction to that jarring). |

you might want to prevent the character from popping back and forth as it's doing right now, try to keep his body in one place...
