Well here's my walkie talkie, I know it's not perfect, but I'm at a standstill with it. I really want it to be good enough for the gallery, as my last three pieces keep being denied over and over again. C & C?

Hey there HardcoreGamer.
All you need to do is polish it up a bit if you're happy with the composition. Remember, it's all about how you compose the piece to begin with ( think of laying the foundation for a house, if it's weak the house is weak ).
At any rate, I made a quickie edit to show you how you can use your existing colors to polish this up quickly:

Here I decided the light source was from the right, since you indicated such on the screen. From there I used the different shades you had to complete that idea. You try it.

Thanks for the comments, I'm pretty new to pixel art being only a month in and so I know close to nothing about shading, but I'll work on it.

Practice shading stuff like circles, squares, etc.. Simple objects to open your mind eye to being able to visualize it.
Let me know if you need more help.

This was rejected. Any tips on improving it? (It was transparent when submitted, I uploaded a wrong one.)

It might need some more character and detail, more pronounced shading and such. http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/23729.htm - Here's some inspiration I guess.

Here I made a quick edit for you :

Don't leave the the gray at 0 saturation. Give it a tint of a color to make it more interesting. Also, adding more shades may help.

your pixel art looks very plain I guess that's the reason they reject it
I made a cell phone(?) from scratch with colors resembling yours and more 3D look and background

you can see that the ligth grey on the top of it makes the cell(?) look like it has a upper part and more depth

like this
