I'd love some pointers on how to improve this little guy. He's an enemy for my platform game, and being equivalent to a Goomba all he needs is a simple walk cycle.

And here's another enemy, the snailhodge:

Any suggestions appreciated!

Outline consistency is a problem.. :( I can't easily see how to fix the gnome, with the trim of the hat over the eyes which needs to be dark.

when working with a small chibi kind of style, it helps to exagerrate the limbs and the head and minimize the body.

Make the santa's hands and feet much bigger, and on the snail try to make his paws and face alot bigger. Don't worry about showing all four legs at once.

Thanks, this is the direction I need to go in.. and I realized the gnome had too much unnecessary detail. I removed the trim on the hat, the belt and exaggerated the important bits (hat, beard)... I'm not sure what to do with the boots, I don't want him to get too tall either.

Edit: Botched the resize.

Looks better. I'm not sure what else to add, you could always try to give him big goofy eyes, bend his hat a bit backward, make his pipe bigger, make his hands even bigger, and give his shoes that characteristic "dwarf" boot feel. He won't be tall, just make his body almost invisible with big shoes on a little guy.

Also play around with color ramps a bit. Try using a variation on Arne's palette if you want, or the C64 one.

Good luck.

Thanks again. :) I'll continue experimenting... and I love Arne's palette, already found it a few days ago. Using ideas from it.
