Ok, so I have this skull:

And I don't know what to do with the background. Ideas?

Oh, and critique on the skull itself would be appreciated as well.

You might try adding to it such as done http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/18527.htm - here by iLKke.

the skull is way too soft, with too much rounded shapes, and has some anatomical errors

-jaw is slanted more
-nose is bigger
-jaw has a way smaller hole near the ear
-cheekbones
-chin
-teeth align
-eyebrow ridges
-bottom back of the skull ends higher

Pragz: I'm not sure what you mean.

snader: I was using a skeleton statuette I have in my house as a ref, but I can see the errors now, thanks.

Howzat?

For the background put it buried inside the ground or something

You mean like a side-view or just kinda thrown into the dirt?

Also, anyone else got a suggestion?

I think he means like an ant farm. Which would fix the slightly weird perspective it currently has ( it doesn't look like it rests on something with the backside).

Zat is a lot better BTW, but it's still very soft and fuzzy. Here's a paintover:
