Pixeljoint is looking to update the Weekly
Challenge Icons used on the gallery's main page every week and ask you to come up with new ones. If yours is
picked as the new versions you will get a Gold Star on your profile and your work will
be on the front page all the time
Post your
pixel/suggestion on this thread for consideration, commenting and help from
others. You can either post all 3 together as one piece, we'll splice them.
Specs 50 x 50 pixels No Transparency No color
limit Must include the word 'challenge' but Pixeljoint is not needed
if you wish. You may use; 'weekly challenge - challenge voting -
challenge winners' instead.

For the
Winners Icon you may use http://i46.tinypic.com/2cncyz9.png - Larwick's Ribbons as refs but do not RIP.

I find "the winners" icon the worst. They look like gravestone, but the rest is pretty neat.
The voting one could be an urn.

We want to see your comment in pixel form. Like you make NEW challenge icons, see?
The 'commenting' refers to c+c on what others make not the current which we want totally new ones.

I made two versions of the first:
I tried to make a fire BG but i didn't work so I tried to do a minimalistic design.
And, don't know what version I chose.
And the voting one, I'll try to make the hand in http://www.wiiwii.tv/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/a-votes.png - Everybody Votes Channel

I made this "Challenge Post" & "Voting", they are unfinished and I'm not sure I can finish them but I tried to keep Larwick's style. Like you can see I hate drawing hands, the "handshake" icon of Lawrick is really better.

@Metaru: Don't know but zoom doesn't blur for me.

I know it's really big, but I can adjust that.

Oh come on jal, half the internet's done it already, why shouldn't we?
On a serious note: Do you guys have any screenshots of the new layout(s)? Because making icons for the new site without knowing what it's going to look like is basically playing 'pin the tail on the donkey' if you know what I mean. In my opinion the new icons should match the new looks, if there's going to be lots of circles then the icons should be circle(ish), if it's going to be wide and short then the icons should be wide and short, etc...

@All, just the 3 icons for the challenges NOT the ribbons. The ribbons are there if you want to make the 'winner' icon using ribbons.

Suggestion for all: try giving each icon a distinct color scheme. The originals are very easy to distinguish between for this reason, at least for those of us with good color vision.

Nice job. A little bit too hard to read as 'iconic' tho.
Nice and clean but I think the first is confusing.
Clean and crisp and read easy. A contender!
Clean and crisp and read easy. A contender! Please try to use the word challenge horizontal so that it reads easy.
Pontential but these would need BGs so that user themes don't distract. Because the weekly posts don't say 'challenge' we'll need that added in the icon.
OMG, Jinn those are delicious! We'll need to keep those for future usage. I'd love to see icons from you.
 Guess #2 should say 'voting'?
We can't use this because you misspelled challenge *PJ nerd is a cool idea but draw your own please*

There is 3 things that I don't know if it's good:
The font, the color scheme of the BG on the winers one, and if I put scanlines on the first or remove them on the last.

I like Elementy's idea the best.
Each a different colour,
Each decorated with only white,
Each instantly recognisable for what it is.
Elementy, there are some things to address, though, if you don't mind me pointing out:
A fiery, tornado ribbon for the background of the challenge one fits, and scan-lines seems to suggest a futuristic digital voting machine, so I would say that the third could be a radial burst to suggest the fireworks of winning.
I would also like the third one to only be green and white, if possible, perhaps showing the silhouette of the winner's ribbons (with drop shadow). Can the drop shadows in all three read as the same darkness? (voting one is much lighter than "vs")
If you keep a sort of "universal contestant" figure, please make the form less blobby.
And is there a way to make the blue one say "vote" and the green one say "win"? (just an idea that I am not very sure of, but since I really like the "vs" I thought I'd throw it out there)
Exciting contest!

@Manjaman, You have made a great great set and so far is my pick/vote. Perhaps less contrast and some AA on the BG pattern which slightly overpowers the icon. Also, why is the hand green? Why not Flesh colored (Is it because most get green ribbons)? If so, that's clever...

Here it is :
Do you see issues I could fix ? Jal : thanks a lot ! About the second hand, I made it green because, ya, as you said it most of people voting receive a green award, then because i wanted it to be the same color than the green cross and finally because like that each icone has it's own dominant shade. You think the red bands don't shade enough in the bg ?
edit : I knew something was wrong i inversed yellow and red in the third icone

I tried to do a small animation of fireworks on the winners one.
And one question:
In the first post is saying that I must include the word "Challenge" on my icons, right?
But Calv and Manjaman putted just "Voting" and "Winners".
So can I do that?
|
Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 24 May 2010 at 1:48pm
The reason for putting challenge on the icons is just because the weekly posts don't ever say that on the title. Its not a 'must' Calv and Manja's way is acceptable too and just something I/we didn't think about when writing the thread. We actually want to encourage everyone to come up with new and original ways to illustrate these weekly icons, whatever that may be.

Lots of great sets by all but they all have things that can make them better.
We were down to 2 icon sets but we now have complete input and so this is the consensus. While one of these 4 sets will be used. If you have not yet made a set but want to be considered use these comments below as guidelines.
These icons will be used every week so please pixel cleanly
For the challenge icon we like Dawn's 'face to face' idea because it says challenge clearer than the other ideas. [tHug]s hands design can also work.
For the voting icon Manjaman and [tHug]s way of showing is best.
For the winner icon we like the podium idea as presented by Calv and Manja. The subtle animation on Calv's really makes it pop and we love that!
The typography used by [tHug] is the simplest but is the best option. Clean, sharp and legible.

A- Manjaman The Main objection to your set is the BGs. They have too much contrast and are somewhat dark. Maybe making it very subtle and light. In your set we'd love to see a new #1 using faces, like Dawn's or hands like [tHug]s. Your type is a little hard to read (less colors on that?).
B- [tHug] Our Main objection is the background making the icons hard to read. Maybe softening those up. Challenges are ribbon comps so a trophy should not be used in the winners icon.
C- Calv We think your voting icon is not very positive cuz the X is kinda negative (nitpicking), Highlight the 'yes' checkmark. The challenge idea really is awesome and the best but its also a lot to process for an icon, which is why we like the simpler face to face design. The animation on winners is perfect. Your type is too hard to read.
D- DawnBringer The faces just don't match the other 2 icons and the dithering style is kinda crazy for icons. Your type is nice.

We'd much rather have the set made by just one person, so yes, if you could rework the challenge (faces) and voting (positive attitude) and type (cleaner and simpler) that would be awesome.
@KORCHA, hehe, your set is too soft and hard to read (nice pixelling job tho). No trophies :(

Alrighty-o. Made an update, changed the faces and hands into a more uniform style. Thinned out the lines a bit. Completed AA. Balanced the red bkg-colors. Added shadow to the vote-sheet. Not sure about the pencil (the big one is not centered). Also, smiles might be more positive?

|
Posted By: Ninja Crow

@ Manjaman: I love yours a lot, though they have the most difficult to read font I'm afraid.
- the hand looks like it is holding the swirl, and while it is beautifully pixelled, it is simple enough that it could represent anything - doesn't seem unique to the Joint challenge.
- the voting box looks like a Kleenex box, and even though the hand is, again, beautiful, I think elements should not be repeated from image to image. I feel that just a sheet with, say, boxes on them and one single bold green tick (check) would be the best.
- I love your coloured boxes, but the shadow or something on the yellow one prevents the blue box from seeming to sit securely on top (which is to say that all the lines make it look like the boxes are stacked properly, but the colouring makes the blue look like it is overlapping).
@ DawnBringer: I really feel like a different colour scheme should be a requirement for the challenge, and I'm glad yours does that so well. - I like the smile for the faces, but I feel that it should look a bit more like two people than twins or clones or whatever allows the same guy to be fighting himself (the face is too beautifully realistic to be a universal icon of a person).
- could the red tick be a green tick? (and the paper looks a little too distorted - yeah, I'm a realism freak, so ignore me if you disagree!)
- this is a terrific winning icon, with a beautiful ribbon, but the thumb looks twisted, and its join to the palm is much too deep of a furrow imo.
@ [thUg]: yours are great (too bad about that cool trophy...), and I don't think they need the dither (though I usually want to defend dithering now and again, I don't think it works here) but could you make each one with a different coloured background pleeease?
@ Calv: the table full of tools is cool, but a bit messy to be readable. If you keep the "X" put it second, and the tick above it. I like the confetti animation (though I never would have thought animations would be allowed) but is it possible to unify your colours a bit? (e.g., Manja's winner icon is also blue red and yellow, but the blue is easily the major piece, and similarly the challenge icon is yellow-ish and the vote icon is green)
It's going to be really hard to chose between these great sets! (especially if any of the above requests are fulfilled )

I finished my set:
Even with Jalonso tips, I prefer the icons to be like that. It's simple and clean, and, imo, fits better to the site laylout.
I also did a preview so you can see how it looks on the main page:
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forget that there is gonna be a new laylout. But I assume it will be simple as the actual, right?

@Elementy, It's not what jalonso said. jalonso only posted the consensus of the entire Mod team for those who wish to edit-remake or take into consideration. No one is being told they have to do anything other than what they wish to do. Dawn decided not to remake 2 and manja likes his fist. No set will be perfect for everyone. I was just trying to provide some input on what we have been discussing.
Your set was an early choice and who knows it may still come to life. The reason we kinda pulled away is because the coloring style of other sets is more complex and we felt it would encourage better quality pixelling in challenge entries. Not that there is anything wrong with simple pixelly pixels like your set. Everyone loves that and your set really is great, cept that 4th place mini ribbon on the 3rd icon :p

Soooo, I'm here with a few edits : I think i have fixed the legibility issue keeping the light effect i wanted, and I tried to turn the bg drastically simpler (i used complementary colors to give more punch to each icone but i personally prefer the sallow shade in the second set).

Also I couldn't decide about the big pixels/broken pieces of the band.

OMG! crapcarp, long time no see <3. I'm so happy to see you making something for this. You are the best icon maker and I've said this to you for years now. When this comp was started I thought of you and didn't think you ever visited anymore. Please note that trophies won't work for this, its ribbons that are given out.

So...tried adding a hand to the voting-icon (always felt it was kind of empty & cheap anyways). A few tweaks here and there.

(edit: oops, I see there's a wrong color pixel on the last e in "challenge", I'll fix that if needed.)
