Hello, I just joined the forum today and this is my first time joining a pixel art community.
I've been pixeling for about four or three and a half years now. It mostly consisted of editing. But in the beginning of this year I kept revising a single pixel art that I made. It is amazing for me when I look back at the first versions. They were horrible. The proportions were out of place, the colors were too light, and the features lacked definition  But, the experience helped to develop my skill.
Anyways, I thought recently that I should register to an art community to help me to get more out of my art. I'm still lacking in many ways. Especially in drawing, anatomy, and textures.
This bug I created here was done recently. I did not look for references and I have not completed it yet. This poor creature was made when I was testing GraphicsGale. So when you combine these factors together with my inexperience you get an odd mashup of limbs. Anyways, let me know what you think and constructive criticism please. Thank you.

Consistent lighting, and volume/shape are really important things. Currently you have no real shape in there, other than th eye(?) and in general it mostly looks messy.

This isn't perfect, but it'll do for now.

Note how, from the lighting, you can see where my lights roughly are. Also note that I'm mostly using really big blobs of one color. These 2 things together give the eye something to guess a shape from.

I also added a secondary light, but that was because I ended up with a large 'shadow' area and didn't like how it looked.

If you want you can use this image as a base(for the shadowing), but don't be afraid to entirely redo it.

FINALLY!!! A COMMENT!!!
Thanks Snader for the example and the time you spent on commenting. I tried to correct the lighting but I didn't really try to correct his shape and texture. Anyways, here is the revised version.

A small time edit. I believe the third is the best one. The fourth has too much specularity. I almost forgot to ask, how should I shade the back leg?

Very nice edits.  I can really start to see all the shapes on this thing.  The only thing that's confusing is the bit of light coming from the bottom.
Also it seems like it's leaning to the left a smidge...I think it's only the head though.
