I was inspired by the sssmily challenge ( http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/challenge_item.asp?id=1207 - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/challenge_item.asp?id=1207 ) but I waited because I'm not good enough to enter a challenged yet. I have no clue where go from here. Please help!

How about trying to achieve a translucent/wet/shiny effect, like in these images:
