This contest is open to everyone and is quite simple. Submit your ultimate 16 color unique + original color palette.
These
palettes are not to be considered art so no adding to your galleries.
This palette will be used to launch a new PJ project on Sept, 12 so if
you make a palette you acknowledge that it will be used by others for
the purpose of this project and credit may not be posted by
participants if they submit their project piece to their gallery but
you will get overall credit for it.
*Its best to assume that other's may use your palette so by entering you are giving permission to all.
Why
bother entering? Well we have these 'spiffy' trophies + points which are rare
and will look great in your profile. Look how beautiful they are :)
+1000 Pts-1st Place +500 Pts-2nd Place +250 Points-3rd Place +100 Pts-Honorable Mention
*only
1 honorable mention will be given for this contest but its the best
looking one so trying to get that one is a mini-goal on its own
Judging will be held by your PJ Mods - Pie, cure, Hatch, ska, B.O.B. and jal (You may comment on your fave palettes and sway the vote)
Winning
palettes will be picked on the basis of how it would work on the
project theme, which will be kept a mystery for this contest to
participants. A unique + original palette is the goal but a well
balanced palette is important too.
Use this template for your submission. You must name the HEX values and NO black - 000000 or white - FFFFFF Image has been spammed-(removed)
Post your entry on this thread!!! Contest closes next Friday, September 10, 2010. (CLOSED)

I suppose so. We only ask for unique + original that may be used for others.

Small question: How exactly does one find the HEX value in MSPaint?

You download Photoshop on piratebay.
And sounds fun... I should give it a try.

Actually, nevermind. I'll just use jal's image spec doohicky, it gives out HEX values. Hoorah!
edit:
Oh snap, I've encountered a small teeny little problem. The image
checker does say what the HEX values are, but not in the order that I
used them in. I have to play a bit of 'pin the tail on the donkey' here.
Is it going to be a problem if I accidentally pin the wrong HEX on the
wrong color?

I have a BMP2Hex program I wrote a while back if anyone wants to use that.
http://bazosoft.dyndns.org/yow/BMP2Hex.exe - http://bazosoft.dyndns.org/yow/BMP2Hex.exe
Just drag and drop a BMP image onto the program and it will show you the unique colours in the image, with their hex values along-side.
Note: Might crash if its not a BMP.

Well this is a sample of Jinn's in the checker. It shows HEX on the color itself. What donkey are you trying to pin?
@shampoop, any chance you can use the template? No biggie... I'm just afraid of everyone going wild with variations and then trying to sort it all out.

Well this took slightly longer then expected. Made the palette in paint, uploaded it to tinypic, ran it through jal's thingy, copy/pasted a screenshot of the results back into paint and matched up the colors and wrote out the HEX.
Anyway...
I call it "The Radioactive Glowing Neon Vomit" palette.

setz, The main reason we even made this into a contest is precisely for y'alls to design a palette with as little limitations as possible. If you show the possible ramp possibilities you'll just be robbing those who end up using the winning palette for this mystery project from thinking about color in pixelart. Especially how to extend and force limited palettes to its limit. All colors are beautiful there isn't really a bad palette, the winner will be the one that shows the most range of possibilities and the most interactive and flexible and extendable one. You don't need to show us either THAT IS what we're looking for. Good palette development is a good skill to have. You get the idea!
EDIT: The only risk everyone will have is what the theme for the project is. If its an underwater theme and your palette has no blues or greys then you might not do that well, ya noes. Even if the theme is an underwater one the winner could be a palette that has no blues if the palette lends itself to suggest water. Here lies the challenge for all.

No idea what the project will consist of, but trying to keep it as scientific as I possibly can. With dithering, I get a lot of color variety and without it I get a good AA depth with cool/warm dark/light colors. Gives a good result in animated sprites so far.

Here's my palette, specially selected from an ongoing pixel project.
For the curious, it's an entire set of Touhou-themed illustrations. And the extra curious, all colors are based off the RGB transcribed version of the (less than) 56-color NES palette. An NES Touhou Project project. How original.
This project used a kit of may 3-color palettes, so here is a selection specially for this event. Lots of gray to cheat around.
Partly inspired by my Copic set. In fact, the NES palette reminds me of Copic markers. It could have been inspired by those deeply saturated markers. Wait, how long has Copic been in market?
Extra points for those who correctly guess which Touhou the above palette came from.

This palette is based on the wonderful effect called cross processing (or xpro) that is "the procedure of deliberately processing photographic film in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film".
If you want to know more about this great processing method you can always http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_processing - check the wiki AND if you want to see some examples of xpro, you can check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/duesdanfe/ - my gf's photostream @ flickr.
Also, this may help to view the palette in a different way: http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww349/asukicco/xpropalettealternativeview.gif - alternative view

@ All, Some of these are so great we may have to turn a few into weekly challenges...mhmmm. Maybe 2nd and 3rd place could be challenges in the coming weeks/months. Anyone object to that, please say so?

Presenting: Dr D's Global 16 Color Palette!

Believe it or not, a lot of work went into this palette, I actually did my research. There should be a color for just about everything. Lots of ramps.
The red is a bit stark, but I feel it can be used better that way.
Hope someone uses this. :)

I object!
Wait, no I don't. I don't think anyone in their right mind would object. They're just palettes, it's not like line-art or anything. And even line-art is a bit of a gray area when it comes to 'public use'.
And looking at all the palettes submitted so far, mine is the most single-mindedly ruthless and least versatile. It will either hit the bullseye of this 'mystery project' or miss the ballpark by a few hundred miles.

Not only do I believe it, I respect, admire and can see your palette is more than it appears without my own research just by looking at it, kudos my friend
@green, I say that because PJ has its share of 'doller' types and they WILL jump out of your screen and beat you if you even as much as think of touching the colors they created and forever own. You have obviously never dealt with an angry doller.*
*Of course, a doller wouldn't read the rule that say its for sharing cuz they see everything too rosy... btw, I like dollers, I just fear them and their wrath

While I don't have an idea how much you worked over this, this is the most variable palette that's posted by now and if I needed an overall palette (e.g. for a game that includes medium sized sprites and seperate environments) I'd pick this. There's only 1 color I could critisize. That 1 tone orange (or tan) is not needed unless spesfically used since it could be made out of other colors.

When I look at that palette it doesn't feel that global to me. If i'd use it would be nice for game mockups but otherwise one must except to see some colors clashing, unless you go monochrome in the usage of greens and reds/browns, which limits it even furthermore.
Of course there's plenty of ramps, but they aren't favored with the current levels of saturation and lack of greys. You can look at cure's or skamocore's palette and see that they flow in a complete different manner.
If, i.e., 2 of those 4 greens where more olive-ish and cyan-ish, that would lighten the issue. Under this perspective, D2301E isn't that stark as compared to other multicolor combinations, but there should be definately a lighter color to make the passage to F5F1B8 smother.
Despite that stuff, it isn't such a bad palette as i make it seem. It's a bit evident in the contrast of warm/cold and dark/light, but nevertheless it's kinda balanced. I hope i'm not saying complete bullsh*t...

While I really like a lot of the colour combinations so far, for me I'd prefer to use more shades of the same colour rather than being able to use many different colours. Therefore I most admire the palettes with 3 or more colours for each shade rather than the ones with 2. Then, it is also especially useful when one shade of dark or light can be applied to different colour sequences (e.g. the light green in Dr D's palette can be added to any of the other colour sequences in the palette). It depends of course what you use a palette for, but when I think about creating a tile or a building, I'd prefer to be able to use subtle shades for patterns and realism rather than having to dither.

So many great palettes...I thought we'd only get like 12 total...this will be hard to judge.
If the other judges are posting (these won't count) I'll share the 16 color version of my master palette I almost always use at least to start a piece with.

Hello good people, and good judges, here is a little something to stand in the shadows of the brilliant palettes submitted so far:
If no one wants any hints as to what it's supposed to be for then skip to the next tinypic. (for judge's use only: There are four intensities of red, green, and blue, which I thought might be useful for mocking up colours that didn't come in a palette, plus four useful shades of grey for toning. If this is too experimental, I submit the next palette instead -- and great contest, by the way!)
Here's a little something I discovered while playing with the palette up above. I thought the colours were very interesting, so I decided to make a second palette. Basically, it's a collection of soft blue & green variations on some useful tonal greys, and a red variation, if needed.
Good luck with the contest, everybody!

Oh, soo many palettes...that's the spirit; let us put the mods to work!
:D
Well, I'm a palette-freak so I couldn't resist trying another... This
time I followed that old path of making well balanced palette suited for
game-gfx. I sacrificed a bit of the dark register for some brighter
colors. Tried to optimize for many smooth ramps and mixes while still
having useful colors on their own.

Here's a handmade "ramp-scheme", and a Hue-Brightness plot + isometric colorspace-cubes made with scripts in Grafx2. (The brightness is perceptual according to my formula: sqr[(0.26*r)^2, (0.55*g)^2, (0.19*b)^2] , multiplying with 1.56905 normalizes to a scale of 0-255... it's better than Luma Y'601 according to my eyes at least).

And finally a little Mockup color test:

is my pallete not showing up for anyone else? Its shows up as an error or not at all for me. I was about to re-upload it and post it but imageshack is giving me errors right now so figured Id just ask for now. And whats up with that picture you posted jalanso? I dont remember that being there last time I checked the thread.
edit: hmm all the weird problems seem to have gone away now.

Its from the display not the actual palette displayed in the boxes, the first one I submitted is exactly like this one but you didn't warn me earlier about that.
Would you want me to fix up the display?

I've decided to partipate too, so I've done 2 palettes that I've never used, but I'm really curious about having a chance to see someone doing something nice with them.

And here, one of my palette I've often used to make demo logo.

PS: Just for fun, they are all Amiga 500 palettes, I mean that I've used a 16 level RGB slider instead of the 256 level from PC because I regret that Paintshop or Promotion can't turn back to this slider mode. I know it leave less colors choice, but I'm happy with limitations, it mean less decision to take for me.

@ Josiah, People use all kind of methods and programs so I'm concerned that some may upload and use and end up with all those extra colors. I didn't notice your first palette being like that too. Some palettes here are png and other gif which can vary the colors slightly, which is why we asked for HEX codes. I guess maybe you palettes should have a warning >.< We'll leave them for now as they are. If you win this contest we may have to ask you to clean it, k.
@ [thUg], the Amiga based one should not qualify for this contest because its not really a unique and original palette. It is however a beautiful palette so I posted on the first post for others to enjoy and use too, under the disqualified list.
Edit: [thUg]- read below

@Jalonso: I'm not sure I understand that; are you afraid some people will accidentally create identical 12-bit palettes (4096 colors)? (mathematics indicate it's more likely that Elvis will return in a UFO that crashes and hits the Loch Ness Monster ;) )

Okay, I am using the template now but this is technically a resubmission. I noticed I have a couple of the same colors as Ninja Crow. This wasn't intentional. I bet we went about the same method for picking pixels though.

@Dawnbringer, I can only think as I work so I really don't know if it matters much but I can download Josiah's palette as is, and import directly into Photoshop, its what I use to pixel-Mac user, as a fixed color palette. This would however give me 69+ colors so it might get complicated knowing which are the 16 to use. With the template being just black and white in any of these palettes I'd get 18 colors. This was my train of thought. If it matters nothing to others its cool too. I did add them both as I CAN sort it out for myself if I need to. Others may not and I was thinking of that mostly.
@shampoop and ev149, thank you both :)

@Jalonso - I guess Dawnbringer meant this your statement:
@ [thUg], the Amiga based one should not qualify for this contest because its not really a unique and original palette
As far as I can see all three palettes were developed by himself (that means unique and original), but colors were picked from 12-bit (instead of 24) RGB palette, thats why he called them "Amiga 500 palettes". I guess its ok unless the using of 12-bit palette as a base is forbidden.
PS. Anyways the last one contains pure white so it doesn't fit the rules(:

Oh I see, I didn't get it at all, my bad! [thUg] does need to change the FFFFFF white + black 000000 then and its in. Its a great looking palette, they mostly all are, really. E: Oh noes, one of his other ones has black :(

@ Jalonso: I've change the 2 black and 1 white, let me know if it's good. And I just want to know if there's a limitation of the number of palettes we can send, not that I hope to get more chance for any reward but it's really fun and quick to make weird palettes and just think someone could do a wonderfull thing with it later.

Here's one.

Extracted from some images (postcards) I had set aside for this purpose and forgot. It looks much more unoriginal than the looks of these images let me expect (not showing them so as not to influence the mystery part yet to come). If I find the time tomorrow I might make another, more unbalanced.
Can't wait to see what this is all about.
