Yay for the new collab!(:
• The first 5 tiles may be anywhere at all and require no neighboring tiles.
Does this rule apply to completed or claimed tiles? Thx

Write me down #22.
Also, the angle of the tiles gives off a top-down impression. Or maybe I'm just crazy. o_O
Slight nitpick already, sorry. If it's underground then the light source, technically, can and should be from any and every direction. Think about it, there's no sun right? So there's like torches and lamp-posts everywhere.

Both, kind-of :/ It kinda depends on what's completed first and establishes starting points for others to feed off. This is truly the weirdest rule and we just have to rough it till some areas have begun. I'm claiming some pink edge tile just to illustrate what 'break the grid' means and I don't really need a number to call. Hope this answers your question.
*top-down grid but isometric projection...to be different :p _____
This is ../pixels/profile.asp?fid=23684 - DawnBringer 's take on his palette, which may be helpful. ... This
time I followed that old path of making well balanced palette suited for
game-gfx. I sacrificed a bit of the dark register for some brighter
colors. Tried to optimize for many smooth ramps and mixes while still
having useful colors on their own. Here's
a handmade "ramp-scheme", and a Hue-Brightness plot + isometric
colorspace-cubes made with scripts in Grafx2. (The brightness is
perceptual according to my formula: sqr[(0.26*r)^2, (0.55*g)^2,
(0.19*b)^2] , multiplying with 1.56905 normalizes to a scale of 0-255...
it's better than Luma Y'601 according to my eyes at least).

And finally a little Mockup color test:

Sooo... since it's top-down but iso... do we do traditional 45 degrees, or can we go all http://tleaves.com/weblog/images/articles/ultima7-murder.jpg - Ultima an this biatch? Which again brings the light source into question.

It's isometric NOT 45 degrees. Just isometric(as seen in fool's ref image) tiles inside a 'diamond shaped' template. Erase top-down from your brain. Light source is shown >:(
*Now have to spend my day making a tile for visual answer 9.9

WIP for tile 82; needs refinition. i hope its okay, this is the first time i do collab like this in pixel art, it reminds me a bit of the game "exquisite corpse" my iso skills are lacking also.
Edit: definetly need the shading and removal of black outline on bottom of serpents neck (it is supposed to be emerging from water) and also shading on floor/floor detail and shading/depth work on the crystal on the wall

Now that you mention it, it doesn't make much sense...
Here is a new version w/o the shadow... I think it's better.
The entrance doesn't really lighten anything other than itself. Everything else is lit by the light source on right that was specified in the first post...
That's why the top of this tile is so dark, it is in the shadow cast by that huge stone formation.

This is tile #93.
I tried to keep as many 2:1 iso lines as possible to serve as a guide. I also hope to show here what 'breaking the grid' means on the outer edges.
BPixels, I dunno if this is to scale or not. Keep scale in mind, k.
Abrax, this is not isometric :(. I purposely made stairs in my tile to show you how your tile stairs should be. I really like your idea, its just not iso.
zch, mars hausegen kutgw
Satsume, looks too above ground, imo. Could it edited to something like an underground spring/cavern? A shark-LochNess monster mix type might help too.
I'll now wait for Reo to add a tile, so I can neighbor him >.<
Me thinks good starting tiles will set the tone and mood for this so be pioneers!

|
Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 12 September 2010 at 4:08pm
No, breaking the edges like that is just for outer (pink) tiles, so it doesn't have a boring edge only...just design. All inner tiles are solid and opaque so other's can blend into them. Be creative and do your own thing in your tile. Just think more underground. I like your tile but it looks like a beach above ground now.

Nice Work WigglyWoo! Like that you went with water on the edge instead of just rocks. Dont know that you necessarily need that black border though...

@Rafa and ALL, second post on page 1 has the current tile reservation list. If you have asked and have not been added to the list, let us know.
@ Satsume, I missed that you did choose an outer pink tile, so you do need to break it up as you have. Must say its boring now and miss the shark :/
@LuckyF, both of those tile have been claimed, choose another :)
@Mars Haseugen, yours added to main image.
@WigglyWoo, Really hard to read...can you maybe up the contrast a bit or clean it so it 'reads' better?
@Abrax, you have chosen an edge tile, you have to break it up or move to inner tiles -nvm...just make isometric.

Hey Jal there's a problem with this collab, me thinks. I just didn't want one of the starting tiles, for obvious reasons but now it's so hard to join. First of all somebody should scratch claimed tiles from the main collab picture. Secondly, there's only 2 tiles (one of which is an edge tile) done, this gives 6 tiles to go, which are all claimed, not to mention people should be able to choose tiles that suit their tastes. Either put a 48 hours limit to the starting tiles, or hand out more than 5 of them. If you wish I can do one.
Edit: lol ok you were too fast. scratch the first statement above.

@Gecimen, at first until some areas are claimed its tough to control. The time limit of 48 hours is too tight now that school has started, ya noes. I do think, for now, that roughly about a week's time is fair to hold a tile. Of course, if someone claims a tile and shows a WIP then more time could be added as neighbors can at least get an idea of what will be in a tile. I made the edge just to show an edge so mine doesn't really count. Of course you can make a tile that suits your taste, duh, make one :)

I agree 48 hours is a bit too little. I'd say at least 3 days.
I'm halfway done by the way... err, though somehow I have stairs in it as well, which bare a close resemblance to Jal's tile. Is this a problem? I swear I'd finished them before he posted his tile... and I don't really have time to start over. The theme of the tile is entirely different anyways; I'm doing a Mithraeum.

@ Satsume and all, I am not forcing anyone in any direction artistically. I'm just guiding when I see things that could be improved. Please be creative and yourself.
Satsume, does this open your eyes better? Do your thing don't do what I show or say. Just use as guide, k.

The top blue pool looks like a hole in the roof, is it? I think its because of the light.

@All, at first I'll be updating as often as I can until things settle down a bit. After that please allow 24 hours to be added to the main collab piece and to the tile reservation post. Everything should be up to the minute now. If I/we missed you please let us know.

LuckyF, that is one kick-ass tile. I dunno if its supposed to be a Stormtropper or not but I see one so clearly and detailed o.O Didn't realize you were still working on it...I'll add this update asap.

No, it's not stormtrooper. I guess I should change the colors a bit. All I can say is that there's 2 guys on the bridge, one is on fire and the other one is god of thunder ))) No more hints.

That is a great tile LuckyF. I just wish my FireFox 3.6.9 could blow it up without blurring. I thought this was fixed in this version?

That's because the forum don't have this line in the css:
img { image-rendering: -moz-crisp-edges; }
But, if you use Stylish or some add-on like it, you can easily fix this.

wow looking at the big pic makes me already think this is gonna be a kick ass collab, also a pretty big one O_O ...
suggestion:
maybe it would be nice to have the tiles on top being more on the redish side and at the bottom more blueish... ?
im just saying...
id like to see more red since its coming out very cold with all that blue
