I made this using one of Jalonso's famous palettes, THIS one to be exact. I'm working on smaller pixels because I fail to refine any larger pixels at the moment. I'm working into larger pixels though, and would appreciate help/criticism. :)

Shading is wrong - it's now just a beveled circle instead of a sphere. Grab some reference of spheres (anything will work, tennis balls, apples, eggs) and check how light and shadows work.

Scribbble-over:

basket also seems to be a bit too big, proportionally, ropes a bit short and I don't see a burner?

So something like this would be more appropriate? I see what you mean now, mine didn't look round at all.

much better. I still dunno about those strong diagonals, they look like folds or wrinkles or the like, but a hot air balloon should be inflated and not allow for dramatic folds. lines running vertically up the balloon might be ok, as the balloon is made up of different pieces of fabric. also, I dunno that dithering is helping here, and that highlight color could be brighter.

jalonso made a http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/17992.htm - pixel hot air balloon a while back, maybe it could be inspirational in some way.
