I can't seem to get my most http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/6977.htm - recent pixel-piece to be available as an avatar?

It is 48px x 48px.
GIF
Animated

and I checked the box for allowing others to use it as an avatar...
Can someone help me out?

I think it's the fact that the preview image is too big... as far as I know, when you use a pixel piece from the PixelJoint gallery for your avatar, it automatically uses the preview rather than the actual image.
