We are not a company. I'm a single guy. I don't even have investors or anything. Just a guy with some programming experience and an idea. However, I do want to start an independent game development firm, and if this project is successful enough, will do just that.
About the Game: Arcane Lore will be a 2D side-scrolling Action/Adventure game with a dark sword and sorcery storyline. If I were the ESRB, I would give it an AO or M rating; so for legal and ethical reasons I am only taking people over the age of 18.
Tech Stuff: I am building it in C++ on top of SDL 1.3, a highly portable multimedia library that is available on many systems and devices ranging from your typical Windows/Intel PC to a PowerPC Mac to the iPhone and Android. I am currently the only one programming it. It is my intention to make it available on Windows, Linux (x86/x86_64), Mac (Intel only), iPhone/iPad/iPodTouch, and Android. If the game proves a commercial success then I would also like to pursue ports to the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.
About Me: I am the lead software engineer, project manager, and project founder. This project is being done alongside work (I am a sailor in the U.S. Navy), so I'm not always going to be available. I have six years of development experience between C, C++, and Java. Most of this development experience was in small open-source projects like Open-Tibia (google if you're interested). I am currently assisting the SDL developers with removing bugs from the SDL library when I am not developing the game or at work.
About the Team: Kole is a freelance music and sound effects composer for video games. He is working on a commission basis, but has offered quite a deal for his services. Martin is a freelance music composer for TV shows in Sweden. He is working for a portion of the sales. Wous_Koen is a hobbyist fantasy writer. He is working for a portion of the sales. James is an industry game developer and project manager at Ubisoft. He is working for a small monthly fee.
Website The website will be at http://angrylumberjackentertainment.com - http://angrylumberjackentertainment.com but right now it's just the apache "It works!" page. I am also looking for a web developer (I hate web development) if you're interested. The name may seem weird, it is an inside joke between me and some friends (well, I dress like a lumberjack and am known for being an angry person. So it's not really that much of an inside joke). Last night I put up some discussion forums at http://angrylumberjackentertainment.com/forum/ - http://angrylumberjackentertainment.com/forum/ The forums are were all discussion related to the development of the game will take place.
Compensation: I can not pay a proper salary. I do not have any investors and all expenses come out of my pocket. I can simply not afford to pay an artist at any rate they'd find reasonable for hourly work, at least not frequently enough where the game's graphics graphics would be ready anytime in the next couple of years. This is the same for the composers and writers and programmers. So instead, I offer two methods of compensation: 1) The simple one is that I pay you a commission for each work. I am fairly flexible on this rate, and I understand that sometimes you must pay for quality, but I'm also limited on what I can afford to pay here. 2) The more complicated one, but the one that I prefer, is profit sharing. If you agree to this, I will assign you a certain number of portions or shares based on how much work and how difficult it is. The default for a pixel artist would be 6 (programmers get 8 by default, writers get 4 by default, and composers get 6 by default. The number I get will be based on my expenses, but currently it is 10). The number can be adjusted slightly based on the individual's diligence, quality of output, and dedication to the project. For example, if you hardly ever do anything, you'll probably lose shares. If you're constantly churning out sprites and getting things done quickly after being asked, you'll probably get more. Fairly simple, right now. As of right now, those 6 default shares would be 25% of the sales. And I do mean sales, not profits. For each sale, you will get a specific amount. I am the only one who is worried about reimbursement for my expenses, it doesn't fall on anyone else.
Contacting Me Here is fine. You can also e-mail me at nfries88@yahoo.com or talk to me on MSN/Live Messenger at nafiepoo@hotmail.com
I can provide more info on request, but I'm trying to be pretty secretive about the plot. I think it's brilliant (but then I'm also the one that thought it up) but will be dulled if it's leaked out.
