I was bored during break and sketched this:
I liked my sketch, so I scanned it, resized it, traced it with photoshop and added some color. I submitted it to the gallery, but it was refused. Please help.

It's very flat. There's really no shading at all.  I think people saw so much more potential in this they might have voted it down.

Well... from those steps you described, this isn't exactly pixel art. Just low-res hand drawn art. There is a difference. Pixel art requires you actually get in there with some kind of paint program and hand-edit individual pixels. For instance, there are a lot of jaggy curves in the lines that could use smoothing out, and the only way to do that properly is manually.

On top of that, the image could use some kind of shading.

EDIT: Okay you have over 100 posts here already. Seems like you might know all this already.

It's such a nice drawing, and you could do much better than this.
Add some shading, it's really basic right now

Yeah really great. If you can shade this you will learn a lot about pixel art.
The reason for removal might be use of unneeded background too.

That back leg cant possibly be right. How is the leg sticking out reaching down farther than the leg that's straight down? It's too long.

First off all, I noticed I had trouble drawing outlines on computer. So I made this sketch and loved the outline much more than all my drawings togheter on pc. They said here on pixelart that I should not trace photo's, but this is my own hand drawn picture. So since the outline nor blocking out areas seemed to work for me, I don't see the problem in that.
I do have a lot of post on here, but mostly it is trial and error. I only have 2 pieces submitted in the gallery.

Anyway, I agree I could add some shading. And now I look at it, the leg to the back is to long indeed.
I think it is very hard to shade white areas. Can someone give me some advise please?

There isn't anything against the rules as far as tracing your own work goes (though of course you should link to the original like you did here)

Some stuff I can spot, stylisticness aside: front of neck is a bit bulgy, as is what I guess is the shoulder blade area, that front leg is set too low but raised too high, and far back one would be better suited to between the others.

Other than that; clean up the lines, pick a lightsource, find reference(s) and shaaade :D

It's really a matter of picking a darker color.  The obvious colors would be grays, but you could hue shift that to be any color really.
Also, you might want to darken the white as a whole to be able to add lighter highlights later.  Just an idea.

I tried to shade but I think it looks weird now...

I spent 10 minutes on your piece.

Here's what I think you should do:
-Remove ALL inner black lines. Replace them with dark brown colors, except when they're in the middle of dark brown.
-Stay loyal to your lightsource.
-Use anti-aliasing. Check how I done it without using any extra colors. You can even sacrifice some of the outline.
-Clean the outline. It's too jaggy in some places.

Update:
I removed the black and the blue.
7 colors + transparancy...
looking for tips for maybe a next step?

The width looks off

I don't know, I intended that I guess since I liked a more cartoonish style. I tried to bare in mind a little anatomy of a horse...(not that I'm super good at it, but I'm working on that)
And for this one I liked super long legs, lots of curves for hair, neck, belly,...
So I guess the width isn't off, just the legs are to long.
I tend to find tall horses beautifull, so I exagerated it a little

I wouldn't change anything about the shape or outlines, Maybe some texture or something? I don't know, my unicorn looks like shiny plastic...

I think you over shaded it, like the light is coming directly over head.  It looks a lot different from your original.
My quick edit takes away a lot of the shading.  I changed up the colors a bit too, but your colors are good.   Keep in mind I can't tell which front leg is on the ground (maybe the spots are throwing me off).

Hope it helps.

wow, this is just freaking amazingly beautiful... The leg is on the side I intended, but it doesn't really matter on what side...does it?
But I guess I can't upload this one...That's a pitty...thanks for the advise...I see, my mistake, because on your edit the unicorn doesn't look like plastic at all...
By the way, how do you like the shape?

You don't want to confuse your viewers.  I'd fix the shading on the leg.
I think the shape is fine except for the rear leg.  Something doesn't seem right.  I'd have to watch a youtube video of a horse trotting to find out what's wrong.
The quick shading edit was just a guideline in certain areas. There's still a lot more that could be done.  Use those colors if you want.

It's not meant to look like trotting.
It's just a pose. I saw a horse do this while starting to train for spanish style. They need to lift a front leg as high as possible. Looks quiet cool.
