CHALLENGE: The Animalphabet

are we allowed to have two animals combined to make a letter? Like two monkeys holding hands to make an O.

I guess that if its the same animal, yes.

I hope this counts. It took a while. Any critique would be welcome. Ref was a tortoise in fools gallery.

here's my wip:

what a disgusting giraffe! I haven't put in the spots on the face though. (the pink strip is his tongue and it's supposed to be a P)

I think the challenge should be reworded so that the animal's name starts with that letter. Dragons make a D, Monkeys make an M, Snakes make an S, etc, etc...

I think that'll give the challenge some much needed zing!

Well, people can do that if they want...I'll think about changing the rules if you enter something.

I think it basicly kills 99% of the possibilities. The idea is to have creatures in different and strange poses, possibly a font for a fantasy novel, so it doesn't have to have the "teaching notion" of a children's book. What do you guys say?

@Jim16; is it a T?

@tanuki; that looks great so far.

Gecimen, that is a T :)

Snake for S would probably be the easiest thing to do, so I'll see what I can come up with.

@Stopa, that's real creative, and I don't think the rules will be changed after Wednesday.

Don't forget that transparency is required.

So i've done a bit more on my Gammerhead Shark...

Still going on it but i'd love some feedback or critiques please...! I'm thinking the dorsal fin (make that all the fins) needs more of a defined outline, as it's blending in to the underbelly of the second half of the shark.

Posted By: pixer
Date Posted: 25 February 2011 at 5:16am
what do you mean by "needs more of a defined outline" ?

Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 25 February 2011 at 5:31am
Nope the fins are read quite well. With a transparent BG the lighter colored fins will be ok as well.

for the underbelly you can also make a semi-transparency with photoshop (reduce the opacity), but i don't know if it's allowed as a pixel-art x)

Posted By: Gecimen

Semi transparency is not allowed in PJ. Only dithered transparency is. Yet I disagree that this piece needs any kind of transparency other than the background.

why not, you're probably right

Are you super sure that semi/partial transparency isn't allowed? Because I saw it just recently here- http://hivemind.in/pj/specs/index.php?urls=http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/59621.htm - link

I noted it in my comment on that but I wasn't completely sure if it was allowed or not, and no one else mentioned it there.

My main concern is the dorsal fin - the leading edge is the same colour as the underbelly and as such it kind of blends in.

I've been using MSpaint at the moment so I can't see what it'll look like with transparency, going to have to figure that one out before submission i guess!

Thanks for the help guys :)

I'm not sure if I have the correct lighting. I'm not the greatest at value... I think I'm going to make an S for sea serpent.

I'm trying to rush it a bit at the last minute and it's turning out bad. x_x

I think I'll just do the giraffe at my own pace and submit it late (not in the contest) in a few days~
