Hi. I had one work that needed revision before (and it clrearly did) but not a work that i put so much effort into. At first I thought I needed to take out the palette and made some minor tweaks. But that wasn't the case as the work was denied for the second time.
The ambiguous automatically generated message doesn't give many clues.

Here's the picture:

And ../pixelart/59607.htm - HERE is the subbission in question.

I believe this might have been an error because for the second time (as the same was happening with the first submission) the viewing of the "image not available for viewing until status is changed to active." This didn't happend to one other pixelart work I had to resubmit. Also I had some problems with displaying and uploading this image correctly - the colors in the gif version went wild but this is a png.

I tried to think of the other reasons but let's go through the list in the Rules section:

First of all - quality control. I don't believe this is a "crappy doodle" (as the rules list elegantly states), for much effort has been put into this one. It's on the par with, if not better than, my other approved works (I'm not comparing it to the works of other users, cause it's clearly not the case as has been stated in the FAQ section). Does it lack in some way? I don't think so, The most comments I get are about contrast and using too many colors. No contrast problems here and the palette in the original challenge was 16. This also makes it hard to make good AA and clear the jaggedness but not having AA as a quality reason? Come on. I give it - I've seen better dithering but I don't believe it's a "crappy doodle" and I belive it's finished.

It can be done better - yes, but not by me and not anytime soon. Also presenting works and getting feedback in the gallery proven to be much more constructive than WIP forums in my experience.

Then the rules list:

   1. Only submit your own work. Do not submit rips, edits, frankensprites etc.

It's clrearly not a rip - it's my own work. I also have the full rights to use the reference image and discussed it with the friend way back (when the time travel challenge appeared). It can't be the case.

   2. No works in progress (WIPs). We're not too strict on this one...just don't submit half finished pieces. This also means no WIP animations uploaded as final art. If you want to show your progress feel free to link to an external file in the piece's description. Remember, this is a gallery.

It's not a WIP. It's not a crappy doodle. It's finished and is imitating the reference image in pixel art style.

   3.   Please make sure backgrounds are transparent or serve a purpose - don't just post a single color background unless it fits. If you need help making a background transparent please refer to the FAQ.

The picture indeed has a white background but it serves a purpose it's designed to simulate a recrutation poster.

   4.  Give credit where credit is due. If you use someone else's lineart or are inspired by someone else's work, remember to credit them. If this is a collaboration, make sure to link to the appropriate collaborators if possible. If the image is a trace or relies heavily on specific photographic material, then provide a link to this material.

Mentioned, given credit and linked (unlike the idea from one of the top arts of January).

5.    Any art you post should be PIXEL ART! Pixel art implies that each pixel is placed by hand (no filters, paintbrushes, gradient fills, etc).

It is pixel art. Made by hand, no filters, brushes gradient etc.

6.    Your small file (preview image) should match the detail file (full image).

It's cropped from a large image with a big PREVIEW caption made in style of the pister.

7.     Redundancies can really clog the gallery. Rather than submitting many similar pieces separately, submit one piece that showcases them all.

No redundancy at all. I don't submit that much.

8.    Pixel art for projects (ie. weekly challenges) should fit the exact specifications of the project. This could mean that a piece must be animated, have a specific canvas size, a certain color limit, use transparency, etc.

Not a project.

So I would like to know the specific reason for rejection.

The reason should have been said in big bold letters, take a look at the message again and we can help you fix whatever the problem is.

Well it says only "quality standards or the art needs revision for some other miscellaneous reasons". So really there are two quite big categories.

But also there's a weird thing with active/inactive image - as I said, with the previous piece that needed redoing, the piece was still on the private gallery side and now there's only a preview.

Well if it says "quality standards" that means your piece isn't good enough to be entered into the gallery."Miscellaneous reason" usually is supposed to have a comment attached to it.

The only thing you can do for now is to either take it into the WIP forum, or wait for the moderator that sent it back to explain his reasoning. Sorry, guess there's not much else I can help you with. :\

I guess it is maybe he will, maybe he won't situation. Anyway I would like to know your honest opinion on the piece, as you are clearly one of the most active users here. The response I got on WIP forum is less than satisfactory.

activity doesn't give weight to one's opinion. ask the guy with the prettiest portfolio :)

if it was for quality control, here are the areas you could improve:
way over dithered, this technique should ideally be used sparingly. overuse of black outline, you have to be careful when using full black, especially when you're doing line work on the interior of a sprite, it flattens the image. what happens at the bottom of the dude? he melts into the tentacle thing? that area is unresolved, it's impossible to tell what's happening. hands are too small, arm shape is strange, jaggies are abundant. light source is a little inconsistent but not your biggest issues.

I'm not the mod who sent it back though, so I can't say for sure what the reason for its revision was.

It's not the best piece I've ever seen, but it's not the worst either.

cure pointed out mostly everything. His cape and the arm that holds the hammer seem rather odd. Make the fingers bigger, or slim down the arm.

Thx for the tips.
As I stated in the description of the submission - the piece originally meant for a challenge way back and is based on a reference image. My main point was to recreate it as pixel art in 16 color palette.
Here's the image:

The proportions are basically the same and the unresolvedness is there too (as it imitates a poster, not a picture and not a painting).

So I should work on the dithering, the jaggies and the outline inside the sprite and modify the proportions more (I hope my buddy won't mind). I will do that and resubmit then. Thanks for your time. :)

As for being active - active people are always around to ask.  I ended up with some good advice about the piece, so all is well in the end. :) Thanks again.
