Well, just thought I'd mention that Ethan Gomez (EMG100) disappeared without paying me for the work I did for him. So, watch out for him.

Sorry to hear that...
He seems to be very active in this forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/589446-dwarven-empires-in-dev/ - http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/589446-dwarven-empires-in-dev/

Oh, I already know he's active there. He has his own forum in which I posted about this. He then suddenly became available and told me it was a misunderstanding, then used the excuse that he won't be using the graphics. In other words, he wasted my time.

It's happened to me a few times too.

I've started sending slightly scaled 90% JPEGs of the first lot of work I do for people so they can see the work is done and then send the proper pixel art when I get paid.

If someone is a genuine employer they'll understand why.

@matt0
I'll probably do the same from now on. That's a decent way of handling it. And yes, any legitimate employer should understand. Sadly, you can't trust everyone.

@matt0's method is very common when commissioning art/design work. Here is how I usually do things when working with new (untrusted) people:

1. Make request and provide requirements to artist.
2. Agree on price
3. For small projects, artist completes the work and sends a thumbnail or heavily watermarked image to show the work in progress.
4. Agree on revisions (and adjust price if necessary)
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until work is complete.
6. Pay artist full amount
7. Artist delivers completed work and all original material.

This reduces a lot of risk for both the buyer and the seller. The seller cannot take the money and run, and the buyer must pay up before getting any sort of final product.

This is only recommended for small projects, however. Do not commit to 100's of hours of work in hopes that you will get paid in the end. For very large projects, work out a payment plan based on certain milestones - e.g. get paid for every 3 characters, or after every 20 hours of work. That way you don't break your back working on something only to have a buyer change his/her mind at the end.
