Hi, i'm currently programming a tiny platformer on m$ window$ in Blitz Basic (might be adapted to linux/maco$) , which will be released as a freeware program! And i'm looking for a graphics artist willing to help (it's not a paid job).

The game's inspired by Man Goes Down by Alex Herbert on Atari 2600:
http://www.herbs64.com/mgd.html - http://www.herbs64.com/mgd.html

It has already been adapted for Atari Jaguar by reboot:
http://reboot.atari.org/downfall/about.html - http://reboot.atari.org/downfall/about.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qVJW_zorIc - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qVJW_zorIc

The preview of my (already playable) version is here:
http://abrobecker.free.fr/other/DownFall.htm - http://abrobecker.free.fr/other/DownFall.htm

So what is needed are:
  * SLPT (Truchet like) tiles for the background.
  * Platforms (4 sets or more, Jaguar version shows pencils which are cool)
  * Hero

(As a matter of fact i think the Truchet like tiles ( http://www.cameronius.com/graphics/duotone/ - http://www.cameronius.com/graphics/duotone/ )could be a pixeljoint challenge in itself)

You can already modify the images in the archive, but do keep the same sizes and format. I wonder if the background wouldn't be better if darker? The hero needs to be taller. All sizes can be modified but it requires to change the code.

It will be my first game, but i've been programming for a long time as you can see through my website ( http://abrobecker.free.fr/ - http://abrobecker.free.fr/ ). The game engines needs a lot of finetuning, though, so that it will play identically whatever the computer.

If you're interested please contact me at mailto:abrobecker@yahoo.com - abrobecker@yahoo.com

best regards,
Alain Brobecker

Been having a quick play with various truchet patterns.
Feel free to make any use of it you wish.

Many many thanks Carl, it's a very good and inspiring work!

I am currently thinking if i won't search a way to include more than one background tileset. I've already made some tests with 3d sets, it looks good but for the game i want to keep a bare background.

I gave a try with the irregular Truchet like in the middle, which i found intriguing. The result is very cool:

Also i've updated the program (argh, so many bugfixes/tests to do), corrected the email on the webpage and i've also included an image of the graphics to be modified, which is repeated below.
The backgrounds by Carl are very cool.

The hardest will be the hero. ATM it's a 24x24 sprite with 4 positions walking left, 4 walking right, 1 position falling left, 1 position falling right. I can expand it (width=24 is preferred though), add more positions, but it's beyond my abilities to draw something like this! So any help welcome.

Do you have a particular type of character in mind? Just a generic platformer humanoid?

No idea in mind... Whatever wormoïd, eggoïd, humanoïd, alienoïd will do! I really think it needs to be taller than the worm currently used, so that we see it better in the game.
Also i'll have to make some tests with a dark background soon.

I've got a few characters http://opengameart.org/users/surt - here which I originally made years ago for Icy Tower, which is basically the inverse of this game which you might be able to adapt (the sprite bounds are 30 wide, but you could use a narrower collision bounds).

Or I could put something new together for you to use.

The demon is very nice and almost the correct width (29x52). It also makes sense, he want to be back home! ;p
I'll make a try with it... (Should the shading be changed if it goes left? Let's see a test before!)

Also i've browsed a bit in the library and found this by Fastland... I don't know why, i find it so cute...

Ok, now to work... :)
Expect a new version in a few hours (i also have to synchronise animation on a timer so that it looks the same wathever the speed of the computer). Cu and many thanks!

Ok, new version with the demon made and uploaded, many thanks Carl!

You can see it the result in the image above, and in the playable preview on my website (must modify the html). I included a folder with all your Truchet like tiles. You just have to rename/copy them to see how they look in the game. And my opinion is that they look GREAT!

I appointed you as official graphist! I'm sure this will make you happy enough to design the platform tiles and colors, isn't it?
I have a one week holidays at the end of the month, i expect to finish the game at this point.

Any comments (especially by you Carl) about the game is welcome!
