Hello everyone!

I'm developing a game that combines standart 2d (for backgrounds and objects) and pixel art (for all characters and - maybe - bonuses). It's a 2d platformer btw. I wonder if it will work fine so i'm curious if anyone have an experience in the subject or have some examples to show. Please post your thoughts and everything else. Thank you in advance. :)

Well, unlike many people more on the pure side, I actually like the mix in media and styles and I do like to toy with pixelart sometimes and use other tools over a pixel sketch, as long as it looks good.

And it hapens a lot in games too,Legend of Mana (psx) comes to mind, it had pretty and colorful hand drawn bgs with pixel characters and objects (high res, but stil...).

The important aspect is to make it so everything matches somehow, even if not perfectly, you need to give an illusion thaty both 2D art and pixelart are part of the same picture.

This goes for color, saturation, and you can even use a silly trick I use sometimes - lower the color count on a 2D colored image in photoshop, basically photoshop will convert most gradients into some sort of ditering which fits a bit better with pixels.

Maplestory MMO uses this combination and it's a platform-style game to boot.  Just Google some screenshots. It may not be the best example, but that's the only platform game I can think of at the moment.

Generally I don't mind the mix as long as it's done well.

Regarding 2D platyformer, we have Valkyrie profile for psx too. At least out of battle it is a platformer.

I'm doing that with our "Street Team" game.  I like the mix, personally.

Yeah, looking awesome, having high res sprites helps a lot!

very nice indeed. I also enjoy mixing mediums. Pixel arts sharpness with freeflow to cushion the back. It's a good mix sometimes. =)

But pixel backgrounds can make a piece REALLY look profesh if done right and highly intricate..

love the fight scene =) kudos.

With the .gif mase0ne posted above, I would agree that it is a nice mix. The pixel art seems to stand out compared to the rest.
