So I finished the duck from the last thread, the weasel is sitting around waiting, for now.

I've always wanted to do a bigger project, like a scene with a character in it... push my limits a bit, you know? I've never been good at backgrounds and stuff like that.

A re-imagining of Kikinak from Jade Cocoon. Mostly looking for composition, anatomy and perspective critiques, but anything on the pixel level is fine too.

Palettes I'm using are http://i55.tinypic.com/213q63o.jpg - This and http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12795 - This combined, both by http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/profile.asp?fid=23684 - Dawnbringer.

Can't criticize the anatomy until you've defined it!

I... don't quite understand what you mean? I wanted to know if the proportions and such looked right :T

the legs look really short, lower body is generally too small for upper body I believe. i'd do something else with his arms, right now it looks like both are asleep and just dangling at his sides- the pose should have purpose and character.

Thanks for the advice Cure. Decided to totally redo the pose with a better reference this time.

The story of this piece (without going too indepth into Jade Cocoon's story) - the character was a minor god stripped of his powers for falling in love with a human. He's watching a major human settlement being destroyed by insects sent by the 'head' god that took away his godhood... He's not looking on in sadness or anger, but rather a quiet sort of contemplation, wondering whose side he should be on.

Fixed the shading of the hat a bit as well.

The clusters in the mouth are quite lovely. I have a little trouble reading the ears(?), and you're shading a little close to white for my tastes - particularly the lightest greens, which could use a shift towards yellow and an increase in saturation.

What I meant by defining your anatomy is to make the shape of your
object more obvious. For instance the wings, arms, legs has shown you've taken a painter's approach to this piece. So once you start sculpting and
defining I can comment on if their shapes are realistic and stuff.
There's a few contradictions in this piece if the light source is infact coming
from the upper right hand corner of the canvas. I'm getting the impression
there's a secondary frontal light source aswell because of things like the
lips and the upper portion of the beak. But then there is higlights
everywhere else like the bottom of the beard thing and stuff..

Head looks great so far. Did you play Jade Cocoon by any chance? It's a game for the PS one, and your character looks a LOT like one of the enemies from the game that later becomes your friend.

I have a bit more time to work on this now... Just decided to block out some basic shade planning stuff...

Chrisbutton: I'm not sure what you mean by "sculpting", do you mean adding rudimentary shading like I did on the wings or what? I figure having a secondary frontal lightsource would work fine, though I'm not sure where it'd be coming from in the scene itself... maybe a fire or something on the rooftop?

Retrogasm: Yep, I mentioned that in my first post :)
