The theme for this isometric collaboration is underwater. Reefs, Volcanoes, Sea Creatures (real and fantasy), Architectural relics, machines, underwater small villages/housing are cool but not 'real city' stuff (roads, buildings, etc.), OTT fantasy is OK as long as all fits within the watery theme. Pretty much anything goes!

Rules
• You can create more than one tile.
• Only one active tile reservation at any one time. You must finish a tile before making a new one.
• Once you reserve a tile you must post an initial WIP within 7 days so it doesn't hold other up.
• Once you post an initial WIP you get 14 days to update your tile or post a comment letting us know its active. Every WIP/post update (busy, school, work, sick, moving, etc.). Every post thereafter buys you 14 days.
• Outer/Edge tiles MUST use transparency to 'break the grid'. (See the ISO-cology collab edges forum_posts.asp?TID=10983&PN=1 - HERE )
• Inner tiles CAN NOT use transparency.
• You must use the supplied palette colors only (No black or white), but you don't have to use them all in your tile (Those making outer tiles will have one extra color for transparency).
• NO animations.
• Your tile must match the tiles surrounding yours, unless your tile has no neighbors (first 5 tiles). This will become increasingly tougher as tiles get added. Some tiles will need to match on as many as 4 sides.
• Matching your neighbors does not mean it has to continue other's idea. Just that it blends seamlessly somehow.
• Please keep the collab's general light-source and scale as shown below consistent in your tile. This may be tweaked in your tile if you use secondary light sources.
• Please post your tile on its own as a comment and make sure to say what number it is and it will be added to the collab master image by a Collab Manager in order to keep the color palette true.
• Your tile may be added to the master image in WIP stages if it shows the tile's direction enough to help others visualize their own tiles.

Special Rules
• The first 5 tiles may be anywhere at all and require no neighboring tiles.
• From the 6th tile on your tile MUST have at least one neighboring tile already posted that your tile blends into.
If one of the first 5 tiles picked is next to the first 4 tiles then #6 may pick a tile with no neighbors. Or once 5 starting points have begun.
• In the event that a tile is made without a reservation or 2 people accidentally work on the same tile a special vote may be held, or a duel to the death may be started by the 2 people.
• Special rule(s) may be added to accommodate whatever loophole y'alls manage to find and exploit.

Note
s
• Novice or pro, all are encouraged to collaborate.
• Possible tile rejection if your tile is not in isometric projection or fails in scale.
• Possible tile rejection if your tile does not match and blend into your neighbor(s) tile.
• Possible tile rejection if your tile just doesn't blend in with some degree of harmony. Should this happen to you check for comments left for you...there will be some!
• You can get tips and help to improve your tile on this thread. No need to make a separate WIP thread.
• You are encouraged to take all c+c on your tile. You do not need to apply all given c+c but please don't ignore them. Especially from your neighbor. Remember this is a 'collaboration'.
• Please use the 'PJs Image Specs' link http://www.hivemind.in/pj/specs/ - HERE to check your final tile colors has max 20 colors (21 if an outer tile) and even the right colors.

This project features ../p/1287.htm - Dennis ' ../2011/12/08/3647/20_Color_Palette_Comp_WINNERS.htm - Award Winning forum_posts.asp?TID=13422&PN=1 - 20 color palette .
If you submit your tile to your PJ Gallery you do not need to credit
../p/1287.htm - Dennis but it would be nice of you.

@all, in case you missed it in the rules post. Gecimen will be helping with the collab for any issue that comes up whenever I'm offline (US times) since he is in Europe. This should make answers and help easier for all.

I rearranged the palette in a way that makes sense to me. It gets greener and more yellow toward the top and bluer and more red toward the bottom. I thought maybe someone else might want to use it like this.

The background color is the darkest color on the palette, by the way, not some random color.

Isn't it always that way

@All, In our last collab (iso-cology) the winning palette was very user friendly and sophisticated. Imo, this time the palette is going to be far more challenging and even frustrating. My advice to all is to focus on pixel areas, or as the cool kids call them 'clusters' and not rely on coloring as one normally would want to do.
Because I think this palette is on the advanced side of things I suggest those who have never tried, thought of trying or even contemplated just the thought of trying it sometime and always revert to creative comfort zones is to download graFX (see the resource section for extras http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12854&PN=1 - HERE ) and give it a try. As you learn to use this great app you'll be somewhat less overwhelmed by these colors in an underwater environment. The template is small enough.

...anyhoo, just a thought, idea, suggestion and advice.

Mac users: Getting this app to work and especially add all of http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/23821.htm - DB 's scripts can be frustrating for us but the basic app works well on its own and is a true delight.

*plug over*

Well I think this is awesome, very readable and good use of colors, even that I can't see the lack of grays in the palette. The blurry feeling of the octopus's head is really creative. Of course this is a WIP and you may want to detail the lower sides a bit (or maybe begin a piece of coral) so that your neighbours can follow you better, not that it's bad now.

Wait, am I the only one that can't see luckyf's image? I even tried on two browsers. At first I thought gecimen was joking describing something that can't be seen...

Can I put my name down for a Hex, preferably on the right edge? I'm thinking maybe Thunderball underwater battle... with the palette it may be hard though.

I might give this a go when I get back from vacation. I would reserve a tile now, but it'll sit there with no WIP for well over a week, so I'll wait 'till I get back. Seeing the last collab took sooo long, There will probably be plenty more spots available after a week and a half.

I obviously have a ton left to do, just showing the direction I'm going. The scaffolding in the middle is just so I can get the various angles right and try to stay in iso perspective. I think this is only my third time doing iso. The current colors are mostly to block in the shapes, rather than be the final color choices.

Overall it's set in an undersea chasm. The center is going to to be a rock spire coming out of it. On top of that will be a crashed but undamaged minisub, big enough on the scale to fit a few people if they squeeze in. Wrapping around the base of the spire will be a very large eel that can only have a small part of it fit into view.

One challenge so far has been trying to make the cliffs look sort of rocky and natural while staying in iso perspective, because I'm using a few different angles.

I'd like to claim tile number 52 (to the right of tanuki's current tile).

Thinking of starting an underwater sunken city there which may or may not be populated by fantasy humanoid fish creatures.

@tanuki; good job with the chasm edge so far.

@dennis; I can put your name down but you'll have to wait till tanuki's (mostly) finished to continue his tile.

@mdog95; it's a sensible thing to do to hold reserving until you get back. But be sure to give it a go when you can.

@graval and mindiel; to reserve a tile, just give a number, we can not assign tiles to you.

Ok, will wait. tanuki, please give me shout when your tile's right side is mostly finished. :)

While I'm waiting I compiled a little template of my own, including tanuki's color arrangement and some color wheel blobbery and ramps and the official scale, light source hints and the full palette. It's saved as an indexed png, so it also has the whole palette ready for use in your favorite pixel tool. Color at index 20 is not part of the palette and meant for transparency.

We will be accepting 1 more no-neighbour tile reservation, maybe, but we want this last one to be someone who can start rightaway, and thus let other people reserve tiles as soon as possible.

I call tile 59 (it's my age reversed - no just kidding ;) ), bottom left of tanuki's.

Just for clarification, as I do not see my name in the list, do I have 52 reserved or not?

52 + 59 reserved.

I know I should wait until tanuki is mostly finished but I just couldn't hold myself back any longer and wanted to start playing around with the underwater theme, so here's my WIP:

I promise, I'll change/make it work to fit to what tanuki ultimately ends up with.

Sure mate, no harm done. I'm sure you can solve the consistency issues later on.

The minisub is going to be a challenge and I still need to add lots of details to it. I want it to look like it's slamming into that rock spire. The eel hasn't been started yet, except when I was sketching this. Various other details will come later like making some plants and 1 or 2 small rock spires in the upper right.

So far I've only used 9 colors, but the eel will have some more that I haven't used yet.

Looks very promising.

@Tanuki and Dennis, just an idea, you can think of illustrating the light plays that usually drop on http://www.featurepics.com/online/Seabed-Texture-651366.aspx - seabed .

Posted By: tanuki
Date Posted: 15 December 2011 at 9:18pm

I'm still trying to make the submarine and eel look good. That submarine needs a lot of work. I'm going to try to add some light on the ground.

Soon other people can start working on neighboring tiles.

I tried adding some light. It's kind of hard to tell what it is from 100% view, but I kind of like the texture too.

Those rocky cliffs are looking great. I made a little edit to show how I would go about aa-ing the eel and the submarine and how the readability of the hatch and handle could be improved.

update to 52, still not finished but the right edge is probably not going to change anymore

I think the seabed water reflections do not work too well on a small scale like that which is why I'm reluctant to add them.

Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 16 December 2011 at 4:07am
@Dennis; Well, just a quick doodle, cause without any texture I think it looks a bit concrete-ish.

@tanuki, going awesome. There are some 'wrong browns' on the tail of the eel.

@Graindolium; you haven't reserved a tile. If you're just trying out the palette, then I advice you to make some plantation or corals and see if you can get the use of all the colors in the palette. Then add up details such as the eel and jellyfish.

Initial sketch of tile #59. Trying to imitate tanuki's awesome rendering of the cliffs as closely as possible for the sake of consistency, though obviously I still have plenty of work to do in that department.

Posted By: Gecimen

@Killermachine; sure.

@Kravvon; I advice some kind of ground texture to you as well, to make it more 'underwater' and not just blue.

Posted By: Kravvon Nar'roth

@Gecimen: You mean texture or caustics?

Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 16 December 2011 at 8:11am
@Kravvon; up to you really, sand texture, light play (see my post above for an example, I think this is what you call caustics?) or seaweed, whatever makes it look like seabed rather than just ground.

Thanks Gecimen, that doodle really helped.

update to 52, think I'm finished, unless there are any major flaws that need fixing:

Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 16 December 2011 at 9:22am
Nope, tile is beautiful, colors and scale is good, looks really underwater, so no major flaw. If you wish to add anything (such as a sea creature etc.) you can turn back to this tile any time. Also remember you can pick another tile.

Small edit. This whole time I thought dennis's tile was to the bottom right of mine, not the middle right. I adjusted the light pattern to match his better on that side.

Another small edit.

@LuckyF and Tanuki;

Tanuki; maybe some bubbles here and there?

@Graindolum; you still haven't reserved a tile.

Posted By: Kravvon Nar'roth

An update. Defined the cliffs a bit more, the arch/bridge is more natural looking now. Also some very rough initial experiment with caustics. From the references I've used, it seems the intersections between the 'loops' or oval-ish shapes that make up the pattern of the caustics receive the brightest highlights, which makes sense because that's where a lot of the light is concentrated. Getting the isometric perspective on those 'loops' is trickier than I'd anticipated though. :/

I'm not really sure how to make bubbles at this scale, but I tried a few ideas.

Another small edit. I've apparently used 19/20 colors on the palette.

Main image updated.

@LBpixels; #26 is yours. Jalonso reserved tile #26 earlier today (see a few posts above) but it seems you've already started. If you can't fit your image to any other tile, you'll have to resolve it with Jalonso since he was the first to claim that tile.

@tanuki; I don't know what you think but I think bubbles really give a spirit. The tile is going epic. I believe the eels scale textures can be smoother but it's all upto you really.

@Kravvon; Going cool mate. Maybe you can think of adding elements that tell a story.

#58 is yours. We (and others) absolutely must make a mini-collab in this one too, but what? Let's start thinking... What is underwater and huge?

this is really inspiring.  Can someone give me a ball park estimate on how long this collab will last?  I really really would like to have a tile, and I finally have a ton of time to make something.  If it gets to the point where I feel that I just can't perform at an appropriate level, could someone else just take my spot?

Yes you can drop your tile, but I encourage you to try and make your best. Other participants shall be there to criticise and edit your work to show you how to improve something.

As for how long the collab will last, well it really depends on the participants but the last one took a year.

You can choose a tile from the reservation list. One with an existing neighbour is preferred.

Ok #60 is yours. There's a reservation list so I doubt anyone else will come by asking for the same tile. (Of course things happen like, an hour later a person comes up with a finished tile, but that's very rare.)

Sure, but please keep in mind that tile #26 is in progress and it might alter somewhat. Yet again I doubt it would be difficult to resolve such stuff.

E: also, LuckyF, the top of yours still really conforms to the grid, might be better to have a horizontal waterline with tentacles and ship protruding (though now I look at ISO-OLOGY all the edges are quite zigzaggy anyway)

Graindolium, I made a little edit with some suggestions:

-fixed grainy dither on the big column and made it a little taller to emphasize the 3D effect by overlapping the base platform, also gave it the same relief features at the bottom as the small ones
-connected the platform to the other one because it felt like a single column on its own platform all alone did not make much sense
-fixed shadow of the big column (the shadow that starts on the platform, which is two steps high, must continue two steps further down on the surface upon which the platform rests)
-removed some stray pixels

Don't let all this discourage you. :) Your tile is a good start.

One more: I think your stairs are out of scale and they don't throw a shadow yet.

small update:

for eventual neighbour tiles: pls dont rely on the current borders, i'm still changing a lot. i'll add an info to future WIPs when the borders will be stable to work with.

@Arkan85: Looks great and I immeadiately recognized the X-Com reference. Only thing that I think needs improvement is the transition to LuckyF's tile 4 and there is a single pixel which already covers tile 5 at the top (marked red below):

edit: Just noticed another minor thing. According to the lightsource ref in the opening post, the shadows fall straight to the left while yours fall to the lower left. This would not be a problem though if there would be a different local lightsource in tile number 5.

Kudos for the X-Com reference. The tile is beautiful. As for criticism, it lacks the underwater-y feeling a bit. Some bubbles on top of the humans and some light rays as in LuckyF's tile would make it look more underwater, if you'd like to improve the tile.

About your questions:
1- No, there's no such thing as 'we want to make all the ground green', cause it's the participants that decide such stuff.  Others can only comment.

2- Unfortunately you can not claim your own neighbour tile. You will have to rely on someone else to finish that c'thulhu. For the spirit, you can help complete someone else's idea the same way and another person will make a good job with your c'thulhu :)

I have 2 comments before you go further. 1- That door can only belong to a dog by the current scale. Maybe you'd like to enlarge it. 2- The upper edge of the water is not 'breaking the grid'. You might want to add some waves or something to break the grid.

still feeling it needs to be bigger?

The waves i started already with the small foam highlights. Cutted them out now a tiny bit further, so u see how they're meant to be. Thought i'll leave them untouched until i got everything that will occure beneath. But i'll keep that in mind. Further input welcome :]

Yay, classic clash of the titans! :) But what will you do with your already finished tile 4 now, LuckyF?

Early WIP of 21:

The idea is that there will be a steep ledge going down from Arkan85s tile 13, which partly buries the entrance to a guarded, fortified cave dwelling. The Merman is a placeholder grabbed from the scaling hints.
