Thinking back, what game sticks out in your mind as having the best graphics for the 8-bit NES?

I mean, SMB3 had some really good black-lined cartoonish art. The sprites were spot on and made good use of their color.

Zelda 2 wasn't bad when it was in side-scroller mode, but I wasn't too impressed with the overworld graphics.

Crystalis was a great game that had some pretty good graphics. (That bug in the Poisonous Forest was really good.)

What do you guys think? Obviously I didn't play every game so you might have some ideas.

I never played much of the game itself, but I remember Little Samson having some nice graphics.
Here's the best screenshot I could find:

I thought it was pretty nice use of a limited pallete

Brian edit: fixed them image.

See, now that's really nice. You see how they only used 4 colors to make that beautiful background? How cool is that.

The rocks show very good highlighting and the low saturation of the grass and sprite are spot on. Great example.

Castlevania 3 (maybe not the best, but one of the most atmospheric).

Overlord.

Kunio Kun games (esp. Riki and Kunio).

Double Dragon 2.

Crystalis had some nice graphics too (esp. that forest you mentioned).

Holy sh*t! They kidnapped the president!

I loved Batman's use of black.  Seemed to make the most of the NES's limitations and create great atmospheric backdrops that just seemed right for the character.  The second Batman game, though much inferior in gameplay, also had great graphics with a large well drawn Batman sprite.

I also loved the graphics on Shatterhand. Battletoads and, while it ain't my type of game, King's Quest on NES had very detailed graphics.

I'm sure theres plenty more that I liked, just can't think right now.

That last screenshot, the one with the president being kdnapped by ninjas, is from Bad Dudes, right? Man, I played the hell out of that game when I was little. It's awesome to have brothers, b/c if I hadn't I doubt I'd have been exposed to such awesome games. XD Go Bad Dudes go!

That background on Little Samson is quite lovely. Oh, I love NES. :D

Jim The Earthworm was the best.

Contra rules too, I got that top-down freak from its second part (or where was it?).

The third one is maybe the Jurassic Park, but its more about ´the fine enviornment and design, cool.
