Hi, I'm doing a game redesign to graphics where the challenge (if you accept) is to make new sprites for use in the game.
It's a very small and simple 2d-game so not much work needs to be done, could do it myself but want the best possible result.
Right now it's text only. Ground blocks and main character is built using ASCII-chars almost like:
0
(|)
/ \
The game can be downloaded from: http://asmhackers.net/pitman.zip - http://asmhackers.net/pitman.zip
So you can try it and see what sprites are needed.
All sprites needs to be 25*25 pixels with a max of 256 color palette (for all graphics on screen at the same time) to fit in the graphics resolution 320*200 with 256 colors.
Here's a screenshot of the game as it looks right now (text-graphic only):
It's actually quite fun for a small and ugly DOS game, and hopefully it will look much better with some polished graphics!
Thanks in advance for any entries/suggestions and even if I don't get any at all I'll try to finish this with my own ms-painted hack and let you know how it works out :P
Any used graphics will get full credit in the modified game!

Explain more about the game. What are the walls/objects supposed to be?
From what I see so far, the yellow blocks look like gold, but I have no idea what the other stuff is.
I'm interested in doing this, but I'm not if I'll have time. What's your deadline for this game?

Hi, you get pretty much artistic freedom to theme the sprites so it will look good together.
The gold things should be "diamonds" really, at least that's what the game text says - but you can change it to a pile of gold or anything valuable and I'll make the changes in the game/text.
The checker-looking blocks are solid walls, and I'm thinking of how this would look best in the game, as sometimes you walk on them and they could look like ground with grass, but sometimes it's like solid stone/walls. So it's used for more than one purpose and could be replaced by several different sprites in the finished game.
The blue stuff is more like "dirt" you can just walk through and it will disappear.
The brown blocks are boxes, could also be portrayed as stones or anything movable by the player.
The player figure only has a very few different looks like now, he raises his "hand" on left/right side when pushing the "boxes", and does a kind of victory dance at the end of a level. Not more then maybe 4 different states I believe.
Some of the sprites could be replaced by two or more new types of blocks, the simple design right now is more a proof of concept and depending on the graphics I might add new types for ground, background image or anything. If you have the chance, please try it out to get the feel of what each object does, and what possible sprites might be needed.
A splash/intro screen (where it's now text only) & new sidebar design for the level no. and points would be sweet too. But I'm not demanding anything, if you just have time for very basic sprites and non of the extras that's fine too.
I'm also thinking of making more levels in the future which might add more types of objects, who knows... :)
BTW, no deadline as such, but I might try to design it myself if nobody has showed interest in a couple of weeks.

Would you care if certain pickups, or ground sprites, animated? Also, would you like the main player to have animations?
Also, how big is the player himself?

No, anything extra like that would only be good!
The player has some very small animations, but only by lifting his arms. Animations for when the player is climbing the ladders would be nice too, right now he just stands there.
The player is also 25*25px and I intend on making the background for him transparent so ladders and such can be seen behind him.

Okay, I've played your DOS game, after trying to figure out how to use DOSBox again, and I have a question:
Does the game update its drawing cycle at 60 fps, or does it only update once it receives keyboard input? If the former's the case, then animating will be fine, but if the latter, then we might have problem. Animation of the ground would be rather useless if you don't see what it does until the next keyboard input. It kind of pulls away from the experience imo.
What do you think?

Right now it only does animations based on key presses, yes. No need for anything else and the game is only 3kb. But I can easily add animation to the main loop when I convert to graphics so just go wild - I'll make it work!
BTW, why DOSBox, are you on Linux? Otherwise it will work fine even in win7.

Still nothing. Anyone else interested? This is such a small game with
not much more than 10 sprites, so could be a nice first project to have
in your portfolios. So.. anyone?

Well, I might as well. I'll probably need a portfolio at some point and I've wanted to work on a DOS game for a while. After I'm done with this week's challenge, mind if I give drawing some graphics for this a shot?

Great, I've answered the PM's but so far nobody has sent me any sprites. If you're worried about them not being used, I could easily create different versions of the game for everyone that sends me sprites - so you could have your own version of the game no matter which one I'll use!

I'm a bit busy right now, but i maybe have stuff for you.
as the base is close to what i've dealt with on rick dangerous remake, that should be easy to make new assets, given time

Hi, I had never heard of Rick Dangerous - but googling the game graphics
- I have to agree. It's very close to what I would like the game to
look like. Looking forward to anything from you when and if you get the
time!
