Generally, games are not easy to create. Do you have programming experience?

I haven't tried GameMaker personally, but it looks like a nice way to produce games that are not too ambitious. It has a huge community.

Here are a couple links of libraries I've used to do basic 2d sprite gaming in c++. You can youtube tons of tutorials on both =].

http://alleg.sourceforge.net - Allegro
http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2128 - Dark GDK
http://youtu.be/prQ2RfnrP_8 - Dark GDK tutorial
http://youtu.be/rYAcoQOgqSY - Allegro install tutorial

Also, both are free. You would need Visual studio for Dark GDK but I know you can use express 2005 which is free.

Good luck.

These are fine to use for a C/C++ programmer who wants to try program games, but these two languages are extremely unsuitable as a first programming language to learn, especially alone, without any training, and without a book.
I really recommend trying any game-creation system first, and then if you meet the limits of such systems and hunger for something more powerful, you can seriously consider learning programming. Using a friendlier language, like C# or Python.
