I guess it's time to post my stuff here.

After getting tired of having a bunch of unfinished WIPs, I decided to take one I was working on and continue to work on it consistently until I'm satisfied. Haven't reached that point, but what can ya do?

The first sprite (Da Mos High) on the left is somewhat of a parody of Elly Von Houten, one of the main characters from the RPG Xenogears, envisioned as a rapper. I first posted it on Pixelation a month ago http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=14223.0 - here , and it is still very much a work in progress. Wanting a little break from her, I started working on  the other one (Mama Mia a.k.a Da Godmutha) , who is less closely based on Miang, one of the villains from Xenogears, as a lounge singer, or at least a woman dressed like one. The second one in particular is not her final pose, but a template to keep her proportions in check when I make her actual pose.

Looking at them standing side by side, I fear they don't match. Do they look too different at this stage to look like they would be in the same game? Plus I'm iffy on the color choices for the second one. And most importantly, ugly hands!

The one on the right has a super scrawny neck, a tiny head, and broad shoulders like a linebacker. The shoulders and hands make her look rather masculine. Her cranium also looks a little short, which has the effect of making her face look like its placed too high on the head.

I figured her shoulders were too pronounced. As for the hands... yeah, those will be fixed. From hands that are too small to hands that are too big

I want her to have a long neck and a long face, but finding references for long-necked people is difficult--I end up with either Kayan women or obvious photoshops. As far as the size of the head itself, before I added hair, her body was about 7.0-7.25 heads high. I think attempting to make her face longer made me move her features up 1-2 pixels, which would serve to make her look like she has a small cranium. Definitely not intended.

Thank you. When I have access to GraphicsGale, I will work to reduce her shoulders/hands and fix her head.

Don't use GraphicsGale. They just had an issue where any old .gal files wouldn't open in the newer version of the software. I use GIMP now. It works just as well, only that you have to export to any file extension that's not .xcf (GIMP's native extension). Not a big deal, though.

Toned down the shoulders, reshaped the neck some, changed the hands to look less blocky.

I've heard good things about GIMP. I've been using GraphicsGale for ages though, I'm alright with it. :)

I watched the Wangsta girl evolve and she has come a long way, so congrats and good job on that!

The wansta girl has this dynamic and interesting pose while the woman is just kind of generically standing from a frontal perspective. There's nothing wrong with that, but they look a little disassociated when placed next to one another right now.

I would try to sketch her body without the dress on first. She's also holding her arms up in an awkward position. You might consider making the arms look more relaxed by letting them fall against her sides, and if she has particularly big breasts then let her upper arms kind of fall behind them partially.

I often find myself tweaking some individual element repeatedly (like her arms, for example) and not becoming happier with it until I finally just erase it completely and start over.

Edit: Oh. And I personally can't stand GIMP despite wanting to love it for its ambition and open source-ness. I use ASEPRITE, and I like it a lot. But the important thing is to use whatever you're comfortable with.

I would agree with tzen on this. The second women pose is kinda too awkward to result in an interest pixel art work. Maybe try to make her holding a glass of wine or microphone in one hand. Or maybe a gun with arm bend in elbow.

Wow... been a while.

I figured that making a template pose was ultimately not helping, especially with the necessary stiffness. I went to starting on the pose I originally had in mind (which happened to include a glass of wine--strange minds think alike, LachieD! )

Probably the first time I've drawn someone with crossed legs in ages.

She's still going to be wearing a full length dress, but I want to make sure the legs are formed correctly beforehand.

Totally lost on the hair. I want to deviate from the source, but I'm not in love with anything I've thought up.

Me too Gimp is totally awesome except that I don't know how to animate in gimp though.
