Hello, my name is Chris and i am new to these forums, I am looking for help. I am super new to pixel art and currently trying to draw most of my pixel art using graph paper. But would like to know of any programs people could recomend that they make their pixel art in. (free programs) i am also trying to make a game, i heard gamemaker is a good program to start with, since it's free want to know if there are any others. My game is a platform game.
Also if you could cretique my work i that would be much appreciated

thanks so much for your time

well, you should definitely update from graph paper. mspaint is free and probably already installed, grafx2 is a more capable program that is also free. a game is a huge investment, and if you have little to no pixel art experience then creating the assets for it is going to take a decade. we can't critique your work because the image is tiny and poor quality, and, like, it's on graph paper man c'mon.

If you have any more time can you tell me what i need to do to make this character better. He is a guy with a bucket on his head in a jump postion. I was using mario as a format.

at this tiny resolution, you'll need to worry more about getting very precise pixel clusters. what makes the mario sprite work is its simplicity, there are not many colors, they contrast well, and it is not overly detailed.

if you're brand new to pixel art you may want to read pixeljoint's http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299 - tutorial as well as the http://www.wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=8110.0 - ramblethread over at pixelation.
