I made this a while ago, then came back to it to fix up the legs that were previously very ugly. I'd like some tips on where I should go from here.

Cool concept. I'd love to see her shirt morph into the body of the spider, instead of just sitting ontop. I don't know about any rules, but the half outlined and half no outline is odd looking to me. Also, you should shade everything according to your light source. The legs are a nice shape, but the colors shouldn't be all "solid." maybe use some of your contrasting shades to define shape within your individual legs.

Well, you see, this is an unfinished Work in Progress stage. The legs aren't anywhere near done! That would be why they have no outline, and no lighting/shading.

This is a bit more of what I was thinking (I switched the depths of the legs)

I like it. I'm not sure where you could go with it. That depends on your imagination. I imagined a medusa-like spider queen with a shield and either a sword or a spear. That's just me though.

Nice but somewhat boring palette. Does it need to be true greys? Purple or bue neutrals? of a mix of neutrals so she's irredescent and shiny???

How's that?

Much nicer but you really have to get in there to see the new variations. I was thinking more play on the greys like this piece shows. Its grey yet with color variations within the grey palette.

I know in this example its a play on lighting which is not what I really mean to suggest.

I'd really like to think that I was better at grasping color concepts, but I'm not. Why exactly would I want to put purple/green into my piece? Why would I want purple in the lighting and green in the shading?

I really wish that I didn't need this explained to me :(

Its not that you need it or anything wrong with the palette as it is. The reason to include or consider these lighting effects is to add impact to the sprite and to use neutral palettes in more sophisticated and elegant ways than straight grey ramps. Additionally spiders and critters such as these often have luminecent colors or variations 'from light' that are not actual colors in the critter.
Just as the hair is just fine but if she was wearing 2 buns on top of her head (like princess leia wears on the sides of her head) with plays on the neutrals it would give her 'bug' eyes...
or she could be more regal if her blouse was connected to the bottom and gradually faded to light...
or if the blouse did not have shoulder straps since her boobs aren't that big and she doesnt seem the modest character.
All these things are artistic expressions that tell your story for you.

feedback and c+c is all :p

Looks a tad weird. Maybe I'm doing this wrong? Probably.

I think you misunderstood my post I was just showing examples of diff types of greys not what greys you should use, I dont mind if you use my example but the lower body should use the same color grey unless there are diff lights. Your piece looks really good, I think jalonso was sick of seeing grey/grey and not blue/grey or green/greys?

Yeah, I was INCREDIBLY confused as to WHY ON EARTH I WOULD USE PURPLE AND GREEN WITH ONE LIGHT SOURCE. I'll fix it up.
