So I had some free time today, and was thinking about n64 games because actually-i-dont-remember-anymore. But I got to thinking about Mischief Makers!
Thing about the game was, it was awesome, and 2D, but it uses prerendered sprite things like the Donkey Kong Country games. Except without the 'looking really good' part.
Even as a kid, the character graphics in the game irked me. So hey, why not redo some?
I'm fairly happy with it, but I'm really not sure about it's readability, so hey if anyone has opinions on that, I'm totally open ears! (and also about any other problems it may have, that'd be fine too!)
Also, C64 palette because why not, but if ditching/editing the palette would make it look better, i'd rather have a decent sprite than a 'well for the restrictions..."

Got a bit carried away. Started remaking part of a screenshot of the game, because, again, why not?
Not sure what I'd do about the background though, that's probably well beyond my patience even without this palette!

Platforms are missing some contrast around their edges I think. Maybe looks a bit odd with the character having so much black around the sides? What do you folks think?
Edit: Minor update. Added Clancer citizen (wow lack of light colors is leading to an overabundance of yellow-green), and a bit of contrast on the cylinder platforms.

You are doing great with c64 palette. Keep at it. If you want to see some experimentation with this palette checkout ptoing's gallery as he plays with it in unconventional ways sometimes and gets good results with these colors.

Thanks Jal! And ptoing's gallery is pretty awesome! If attempting this background has taught me anything, it's... that I'm not as good! lol
I don't know, i've been staring at this too long. I'll just leave it here for any of you folks to critique if you would. I don't know if I've crossed the line into too busy, if the colors are working at all, if that line-dither actually works (I'm officially horrid at dithering. Give me a trophy), I'll just come back to it later with fresh eyes...

I did some quick dithering to show you a gist of what to do. Straight lines isnt dithering, but an easy way to dither is by making straight lines and the breaking them up, particularly near the end. I was kind of messing around with the dithering on the right side of that cloud though, dunno if it's good or bad haha.

Thanks you two! And WOW, yeah, my brain just has issues processing dithering patterns like that, ||||! but dangit I just might have to try!
Ive started messing with the clounds like DragonMarx's edit, though I might throw in the 2nd color from ||||'s if I can get it to look good. And dangit, I'm going to have to figure out dithering cuz that background looks good on ||||'s!
Also, began animating, because it just didn't scream Mischief Makers without the platforms threatening my dreams~

edit: okay, so here we go. I'm pretty happy with this now (wow this was supposed to be just a single, unanimated sprite lol), but I'm going to wait a bit to submit it in case any of you kind folks have any more pointers for me :D

That looks nice animated!.. I made some spinning diamonds quite like those for my signature at FFHacktics. But they're just edited copies of the ones from in-game when you die for good. I like the dithered one of course & I actually JUST noticed something; the dither on the foothills changes a bit for a frame or so at the tops.
