http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1519&PN=%201 - A more indepth description of the world
I want to see sprites based of animals from the South Pole.
penguins, seals, etc.
Boss character is the Emporer Penguin himself, Brian the Great. I'd like to see some reference to his characters made into himself. Basically, I am keeping the descriptions fairly basic so as to get a good amount of interpretations from everyone.
Keep your colours simple so we can easily edit. Animations will be required.
Anything else I should mention? Post it here.

Why just one style? I mean we want everyone to be a part of this right? So they can have their own style of shading, coloring, even styles of artwork.

As Art Director, I really have to disagree with you Souly. Look at any other pixel game. A wide variety of people work on one game and work with the style that has been chosen for the game. If you were to go into a job with the attitude that everyone should do their own style, you wouldn't last long. We all have to meet in the middle somewhere.
Everyone: I think it would be best to leave the colours until the sprites have been chosen. This will make it easier for simple edits and colour variations. I think you'll all agree. If not, send me a banter to pixelblink at pixeljoint dot com and I'll make sure it goes into the correct Trash... I mean... banter folder... where it will be read most certainly... jk

i think that since this is Brians level, there should be more reflecting his style rather than just his characters. Penguins is one thing, but Brian has like a whole breed, you know how when you look at a penguin pixel in the gallery you can tell right away if it was done by brian or not. Now I'm just ranting, but my point is, his style should be shown too.

Hmm. It's an interesting topic of discussion, with the final word falling at Pixel Blink's decision. Personally, I feel Brian's penguins should remain in their typically Brian state.
They already match the cartoony style and I LOVE the animation of the penguin popping down into the tank. I've never been too fond of Brian's simplistic 'black outline' style, however I'm very impressed by the animations. They fit perfectly.
I think that the tanks need to be redone though. Their shading doesnt reflect the smooth feel and texture of metal, or match the style of the penguins. Avoid using dithering when shading metal, especially for something that will need to be animated eventually. My only other tip would be to study the design of a tank. Sure, keep it cartoony, but I think d-p's tank design looks far more convincing, although the shading is still not really desirable.
These are just a few things I though worth noting, hope they were helpful.

I was on something but I want to keep it appropriate so I just want to excuse the rambling I made. Anyways, what I meant was; We should try to possibly match the boss artists art style. Not every seperate artist doing his own style for each sprite.

I understand what you mean Souly. I still gotta say that the game as a whole should have a certain style connecting through each level. Not so much the lines as I mean the colouring styles, etc.

Oh yes i would like to point out i love brain's penguin popping animation! It could be a sort of warning that it's about to fire/move etc. And yes that metal slug thing works pretty well, although it could look a tad lame if the static turret fires out a ...er thing, that just goes toppling to the floor, could be pretty comical though.

It's quite hard to make out but i like the look of the penguin on that, Di0xygen. Looks like it could be some sort of runt penguin in comparison to Brian's ones, like goombas in comparison to koopas from super mario.
Oh yes and here's my killer snowball of ice and doom!

(The animation is half the speed it looks good on, beyond my control.)
Oh and of course, credit to JJ_Maxx's pallette of which i took from (middle tile template).

And here's what it might look like... (also half-speed) >.<

Really nice work Larwick and JJ_Maxx.
I decided to try and sprite one of Brian's penguins in his style, but making sure it matched PJ aswell.

He should scale up to the PJ nerd pretty well. He reminds me of a mc chicken nugget, or Grimace. http://www.pixeljoint.com/istvan/penguinrunning.gif -

No, the penguin is standing at the same angle as the PJ nerd. It would still work on a flat surface and is more interesting than a side on profile.

d-p

While I think these are wonderfully done, I don't think they reflect the toonish nature of the game. Too realistic in otherwords.
Brian the Great

Of course the BtheG level should be focused on your penguins! These are really good and are pretty much what I have in mind. One thing I'd like to see is an edit with some simpler colours. Not so texturized in any case. Also, this guy looks kind small in comparison to PJ.
Dioxygen

Not quite sure what this is
Larwick

Snowball is cool. Needs to be sped up and tweaked a bit. This is pretty cool though. Maybe we could make it so as it rolls it builds up into a gigantic snowball that'd crush him?
JJ Maxx

This could be BtheG's weapon I think... one at a time though instead of all three at once.
iSTVAN

Very cute and very close to BtheG's style IMO. Colours are looking nice and crisp. This looks like a good size for them to be in comparison PJ himself
Anyways gang, it's a good start to this level. Now I would like to see some more variety in sprites. What happened to the rest of the animals I mentioned before? How about some wierd lil snow creatures?

Lol, i completely forgot about the snowball. I might have a crack at the biggenising idea soon. And yeah, when i saved it the slides were at 0.05 seconds long each, but it slowed them down to 0.1 when it was saved, if they cant be faster than that i'll have to re-do the animation or something ... well, i'll re-do it anyway, cus of above and cus there were quite a few shortcuts made.

Do you think making a falling icicle sprite would be good? Because
that's kinda essential when it comes to ice areas in games it seems
like. I'll take a crack at it if it could be used. I don't want to work
for no reason.

I thought about making a falling icicle as well You could make it uhm.. quiver a little before it falls down. Like in Yoshi's Island if I remember correctly If it's well done I'm sure they'd take it :3

I have no idea how it's going to move (well, like a goomba i suppose)... but, i tried animating it and failed badly, so if any of you like it i'll have to hand it over to you guys to animate and/or edit. Used iSTVAN's penguin pallette.

Inspired by: Metal Slug, Counter Strike, Splinter Cell and others.

A few penguin soldiers. They are small, but that's even cooler. It is soo much fun making these sprites. The penguin with the radio (Mr. Two) could call reinforsments, choppers, and air strikes. Some tanks would be good too. The guy with the minigun can only be attaked by behind. Some animations would be added soon.
EDIT: Animated...

Does this level have trees in the bg or is it all ice? At any rate, I made a snowy owl. Or it could be the O RLY owl, your choice. Again, I'm not sure if it's in style. If it isn't much of a bother, maybe someone could make a tutorial for the style?
